An Angel in the Supermarket

It was Friday, on a balmy spring morning, and I was standing in line at the checkout counter in Rockland Kosher Supermarket. My cart was overflowing with groceries which would add up to a pretty penny. I was, however, the grateful recipient of food stamp benefits, and one swipe of my precious plastic card would cover the cost of my bimonthly food shopping trip. Nonetheless, I had chosen carefully, scanning the sale aisle for bargains, wanting to make the most of the government’s assistance. I loaded my items onto the counter and waited patiently for the cashier to add them up.

Important Message to the Residents of the Catskills

To all our honored Jewish brethren residing in the Catskill region and beyond, sheyichyu;

The quality of medical care in the Catskill region is unfortunately not on the level of care that you are accustomed to in the city. Certain medical capabilities and treatments are just not available in the local community hospitals (as is well known both inside and outside our communities) and frequently results in delay of proper care.

Sullivan County’s Walmart Beefs-Up Kosher Section

By Steve Israel for the Record Online

MONTICELLO — First, Walmart conquered the Main Street market of hardware and underwear.

Now the retail giant is going after another market — the Catskill kosher market of gefilte fish and blintzes.

The Monticello Walmart just ran a full-page ad touting “expanded selections” in its “new kosher fresh section for the summer 2010.” It’s added kosher products like Empire organic chicken and Teva Angus beef sliders.

Route 52 Worst Road for Traffic Deaths

Herald Record

Route 52 in Ulster County saw five fatal crashes in 2006-07. Overall, the roadway ranked No. 1 among deadly roads in our region from 1999-2007.

Route 52 rises out of Pine Bush, crosses into Ulster County, climbs through Walker Valley and Warwarsing, and, before descending sharply into Ellenville, offers expansive views of Highland Lakes State Park and the Catskill foothills.

It’s a beautiful drive, and more and more often, a deadly one.
