Picture of the Day – 1984 Permits for the Parade!

In 1984 (23 years ago) parade organizers applied for a permit from the 71st Precinct to shut down Empire Boulevard from Brooklyn Avenue all the way down to Troy Avenue and a stated attendance of 5000 people. Needless to say that the application was approved by none other then our Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly, who at the time served as the Deputy Inspector in command of our 71st Precinct.

From the Archives: In Transition

A delegation of Lubavitch from the US shown here with survivors and officers sometime in 1947, at the Poking DP camp in Germany. Hundreds of Chabad Chasidim were interned in the camp, which openend in January 1946 and reached its maximum of 7,645 Jewish inhabitants on October 19, 1946. It had several Talmud Torahs with more than 200 pupils, as well as a Lubavitcher and a Klausenburger Yeshiva with a combined 500 pupils. The camp closed on February 16, 1949.

In the picture: Brooklyn Borough President Mr. Marty Markowitz (L) wearing a Crown Heights Softball League baseball cap with the league commissioner Zevi Steinhauser.

Mr. Markowitz told Zevi that he was happy to hear that such a league exists in Crown Heights, and he said that only in Crown Heights will you hear of such a thing. He thanked Zevi for the cap and told him that he will add it to his famous cap collection which he keeps on display in his office.

In honor of Yuf Alef Nissan, the Rebbes birthday we are please to publish this picture for the very first time with our thanks to Rabbi Mordechai Kirschenbaum for sending us this picture.

The picture was taken on Vov Thisray 1965 at the Rebbes mother, Rebbetzin Chana’s A”H Levaya. It was taken in the Montefiore Cemetery in Queens.
