Obituary: Rabbi Yisroel Rapoport, 55, Beloved Rabbi in New Jersey

Better known as “Raps” or “Bubby” to his many friends and his admirers, Rabbi Yisroel Rapoport was remembered as a beloved rabbi who was “always reaching out to others with bubbling enthusiasm and love.” He lived his life in service of others as rabbi of Congregation Sons of Jacob in Vineland, N.J., and as co-director with his wife, Nechama, of Chabad-Lubavitch of Cumberland County. He passed away on Feb. 3 at the age of 55.

This year was the first time a Super Bowl was played—and won—by the home team on its home turf. And for some Jewish Tampa Bay fans, it was also the first time they felt truly at home, as the Buccaneers coordinated with Chabad of Tampa to help set up a kosher concession stand where hundreds of fans took a break from the game to don tefillin, enjoy a kosher hot dog or potato latke, or just chat with the rabbi.

Hope for Heroes in Rostov

Golda* was a toddler when peasants beat her parents during a pogrom in Rostov, Russia. A few years later she watched as Nazis rounded up and murdered 27,000 of the city’s Jews over the course of two days. After her miraculous survival, she returned to live in the city of her birth. Once a beloved member of the Chabad Seniors Club and a cheerful regular at the soup kitchen, 84-year-old Golda is now confined by pandemic regulations to her dingy, one-room, fourth-floor.
