Maccabi Team Celebrates Shabbos in Prague

Lubavitch.com

For many of the thousands of Israelis who came to Prague to cheer their team at the Euro Basketball Final Four playoffs, the event offered an unexpected spiritual dimension.

With such a large number of Jewish people in one place, Chabad seized the opportunity, offering everyone the chance to do a mitzvah. Many wrapped tefillin, said a prayer, and gave some charity. But the effort became dramatic when hundreds celebrated Shabbat with Chabad’s Rabbi Manis Barash.

Beis Iyar: 172 Years to the Rebbe Maharash

Chabad.org

The fourth Rebbe of Chabad-Lubavitch, Rabbi Shmuel Schneersohn (1834-1882), known by the acrynom “Maharash”, was born in the town of Lubavitch (White Russia) on the 2nd of Iyar of the year 5594 from creation (1884). His father, Rabbi Menachem Mendel of Lubavitch (the 3rd Chabad Rebbe, known as the “Tzemach Tzeddek”) once remarked that Rabbi Shmuel’s birthday, coinciding with 17th day of the Omer Count, is defined by the Kabbalistic masters as Tifferet sheb’Tifferet (“Beauty of Beauty”)

Although Rabbi Shmuel was the youngest of Rabbi Menachem Mendel’s seven sons, he was chosen to succeed his father as “rebbe” and leader of Chabad in the movement’s capitol, Lubavitch (five of his brothers established branches of Chabad Chassidism in other towns in White Russia and Ukraine). In addition to leading his Chassidim, guiding and advising their spiritual and material lives and authoring many maamarim (discourses of Chassidic teaching), Rabbi Shmuel traveled extensively to throughout Europe, meeting with government and business leaders to exert pressure on the Czarist regime to halt its instigation of pogroms against the Jews of Russia.

Rabbi Shmuel passed away at age 47 on the 13th of Tishrei, 5643 (1882).

Shomrim Member & Father Assaulted

At around 9:20 pm tonight, Motzoai Shabbos, a Member of Shomrim and his father were walking down Kingston Ave. toward Lefferts Ave.. As they past 451 Kingston, a large building (the one with the 2 fires in one day), a group of black teens attacked and assaulted them. The Shomrim member called for help and other members responded immediately and forced them back. Police were called and responded in large numbers, but would not apprehend anyone, in fear on a riot.

B”H the other Shomrim members responded in time to prevent any serious injuries. This incident came just a few minutes after the first assault where a Lubavitcher was punched in the face.

We would like to warn all residents that there has been a major increase in muggings and random violent assaults at all hours of the day, some of it may be gang related, therefore we would like to warn everyone to be extremely vigilant and aware of your surroundings at all times. Don’t venture out late unless absolutely necessary. If you see something say something, call Shomrim at (718) 774-3333 24/7.

Lubavitcher Assaulted on His Way Home From Shul

This Motzoai Shabbos a resident of the community, was on his way home from Shul after Shabbos when he was assaulted. He was passing the infamous building on Lefferts and Kingston when a single black man who directed racial slurs at him including among other slurs references that “Jews don’t belong in Crown Heights” approached him. He just hurried to walk away which must have angered the assailant since he then punched him in the face. B”H he was not hurt, and was taken to the police station where they filled out a police report.

Stone Thrown at Car Window

The car at the intersection where the incident took place

This Motzoai Shabbos at around 9:30 pm a Jewish woman driving down Brooklyn Ave had a stone thrown at her car from the building, 441 Empire Blvd, on the corner of Empire and Brooklyn. The stone, which was thrown from within a group of black teens and was clearly directed and this car, hit the drivers window and B”H. did not break it. Shomrim were called and responded within minutes, they then called the police and filed a report. This comes five minutes after a Shomrim member was assaulted on Lefferts and Kingston.

With this recent surge in violence in our community (which some say is a result of the good weather we’ve been having), we urge all members of the community to remain vigilant and if you see something happening please call Shomrim at (718) 774-3333.

12 Year Old Girl Mugged on Kingston and Empire

At around 4 O’clock Friday afternoon a 12 year old girl was approached on Kingston Ave. and Empire Blvd. by a group of black girls, aging from 14 to 15 years old, they bullied her around and mugged her of 11 dollars. The police responded in time to file a report.

A very disturbing factor about this mugging is its similarities between the mugging that occurred on Thursday Evening, in which a girl was approached by a larger group in broad daylight which assaulted and mugged her as well, Click here for that story.

All this is happening when our wonderful politicians are busy fighting amongst themselves to gain power in one way or another while us residents are getting terrorized, the police seem to have lost handle on the situation here and the summer isn’t even out in full swing yet. Where have we gotten to? When a girl gets mugged in the height of the Shabbos preparations and these animals get away with it! On Kingston and Empire no less.

Girl Assaulted and Mugged in Broad Daylight

Thursday evening a girl was Mugged and Assaulted on the corner of Eastern Pkwy and Brooklyn Ave while on her way home. The incident took place while it was still light outside and people were walking around. The girl was approached by a group of 5 or 6 black teen’s both male and female, and out of fear she just blacked out. While she was out they managed to steal her cell phone, and pull one of her earrings off.

A Lubavitcher who witnessed the incident got into his car and gave chase to the group, reports have it that there was a black man chasing them as well, but this is unconfirmed. Most of the group fled down Brooklyn Ave while one of them turned down President St just as police showed up for the Bochur that had gotten struck. The police nabbed this one teen and cuffed him, the girl that was mugged and assaulted was then brought down and was asked if she can identify him, but she replied in the negative since she blacked out and she couldn’t even give them an exact number of people involved, the police were therefore forced to let him go.

Later on, a few children playing on the block found this girls phone thrown under a bush close to her house. The girl refused medical attention, and was still noticeably shaken 2 hours after the incident.

One of the issues that happened here (aside from the girl getting assaulted) is that the Lubavitcher that gave chase didn’t have the number to call Shomrim, and even more so is that no bystanders chased after them either. One of the strengths of our community is that when such an incident happens someone can scream “CHAPTZEM” and would get a response from people walking on the street and even from people in houses, it used to be a term as effective as screaming FIRE, in which every would come out and help. Today people will just look the other way.

Bochur Assaulted, Nabs His Assailant – Gang Related

Grand Army Plaza, Marked off are the points of the incident.

At the beginning of last week a Bochur who was on his way home from an evening walk in Prospect Park was assaulted in front of the Brooklyn Public Library by a group of black youths. The incident took place at around 8:15pm, the animals were standing in a group on the sidewalk in front of the temporary side entrance. As the Bochur passed he heard the group yelling some racial slurs at him and started to run after him and then struck in the back of his head.

The Bochur, who had just read the story here on CrownHeights.info about the Bochur who was struck and injured on President and Kingston, wouldn’t let the animal get away with it, so he turned around and went after him. After a short pursuit the Bochur managed to grab him, at which point the group surrounded the Bochur who was holding the one that hit him and attempted to rob him , enabling the assailant to break free. The Bochur just ran off after him again leaving the large group who themselves ran away seeing passersby’s pulling out their cell phones and dialing 911.
Once again the Bochur managed to apprehend the animal and that’s where it ended. The most interesting thing about this incident is that for over 15 minutes during which time the scene was unfolding the people passing just ignored what was going on, very few people even bothered to call 911.

Terrorists Killed More Than 14,500 People in 2005

Bloomberg Online

Terrorists killed more than 14,500 people in 11,000 attacks across the globe last year, the U.S. State Department said in its annual report on terrorism.

Fifty-six of those killed were Americans, the report said. Three thousand of the deaths were attributable to 360 suicide bombings. There were 25,000 people wounded and 35,000 people kidnapped, the report said.

“We saw indications of an increase in suicide bombings,” the report said, noting that the July 7, 2005, bombings in London that killed 54 people were the first such attacks in Europe.

The report sums up a year in which suicide bombers also attacked in Iraq, Jordan, Israel, Egypt and Indonesia. The most significant attack for which al-Qaeda claimed responsibility was the Nov. 9, 2005, suicide attack against hotels in Amman, in which at least 57 people died, the report said.

Sale of Third Avenue building could bring Slope to the Gowanus

Brooklyn Papers
The Jewish Press building on Third
Avenue was just bought by
developer Shaya Boymelgreen.

A powerful real-estate developer has bought the Jewish Press building near the Gowanus Canal — the latest in a series of moves that could transform the industrial area into a village of housing, stores, art galleries and waterfront esplanades.

“We are very excited about the acquisition of the JP site,” said Sara Mirski, spokeswoman for developer Shaya Boymelgreen. “The site provides improved access opportunities to [a] proposed waterfront esplanade and park” along the canal.

The sale of the building, on Third Avenue between First and Third streets, coupled with construction of a Whole Foods market one block south and development along Fourth Avenue one block east, accelerates the perception that Park Slope is expanding through the old Gowanus neighborhood all the way to the canal (“Park Slope River,” anyone?).

The Unofficial Inauguration of New Hall at Chovevei Torah

Thursday evening, Chovevei Torah (Lubavitch Yeshiva) on Eastern Parkway saw a unique event. Catered from the newly constructed kitchen, and served by a few bochurim. It was an event unlike most others; the primary purpose of this elaborate feast was for the beis medrash bochurim to bond with each other as well as with the mesivta bochurim.

After a while of chitchat among the bochurim, Rabbi Weinfeld got up to explain the peculiar event. “Bochurim are always asking me when will we have time to be able to just talk with one another? We can’t do it during seder, by meal breaks we have to eat, and after seder’s over, there’s Seder Sichos and then we must get to sleep to be up for seder the next morning?” “So” he answered, “tonight is your night, now is the time, we are having this se’uda with the primary intention of giving you boys a chance to socialize in a different setting. Yeah there will be niggunim, and Divrei Torah, for we know what it says about those who eat without Divrei Torah, but the main goal is to socialize as well as bond with the Mesivta boys.”

Bochur Struck By A Reversing Car

Yesterday evening a reversing black sedan struck a 13 year old Bochur rollerblading on President St. between Brooklyn and New York avenues. B”H there were no serious injuries and while Hatzalah treated him on the scene, as a precaution they nevertheless took him to Kings County Hospital. NYPD responded to the call as well.

This would be the time to remind children that plan on bike riding or rollerblading in this beautiful weather of the rules that will keep them safe. These should include; that they should get off their bike when crossing streets, look in all directions, hey it’s Brooklyn you may never know when someone will decide to drive a few blocks in reverse, and when rollerblading to wear protective gear (i.e. helmet, etc.). Don’t forget that anyone under 14 riding a bicycle is required by law to wear a helmet.

So is it Oser to vote, or is it a good thing?

Shwei wrote; “Those who participate in the elections will be assisting the organizers in their transgressions” while R. Osdoba wrote; “The election is a very positive thing, and I am requesting from each and every person who eligible to vote, to do so for the sake of heaven”.
