Citing religious prohibitions, a Chabad rabbi in eastern Russia vetoed a local Jew’s plan to erect a statue of Moses in Birobidzhan — an area which Soviet governments designated as a Jewish autonomous region.

NY Times Smears Orthodox Jews, Violates Own Policy

The New York Times made a point of mentioning that two of the subjects of an FBI inquiry into corruption in the NYPD are Orthodox-Jewish men, violating their own policy of not bringing up a suspect’s race or religion if it has nothing to do with the crime being investigated. None of the other suspects’ race or religion is mentioned.

Increased Funding for Yeshivos in NYS Budget, But No Education Tax Credits

Included in the New York State budget for the coming fiscal year, finalized today in Albany, were allocations of $72.5 million in additional funding for nonpublic schools across the state. However, there are no tax credits to help offset the high cost of tuition borne by nonpublic school parents.

Judge: Airline Must Pay Up for Lacking Kosher Food

The São Paulo Court of Justice has awarded $1,400 to Isaac Kopfler, a Brazilian Jew traveling aboard Lufthansa Airlines from Zurich to São Paolo, after the German airline failed to provide kosher food for their passenger despite his request for it at the time he purchased his ticket. The incident occurred on March 21, 2012.
