Jewish group’s big loss in theft

Mercury News

VITAL RECORDS TAKEN ALONG WITH EQUIPMENT

The person who broke into a Sunnyvale synagogue office sometime over the weekend and stole computers, phones and software made off with not just equipment, but the recorded heart of a community.

Since Chabad of Sunnyvale opened three years ago, it has offered services for Jewish families that now number more than 500. No financial information about any of them was stolen, but hundreds of kids waiting to go to summer camp will have to register all over again. And Rabbi Yisroel Hecht must somehow re-create years’ worth of historical data about programs and people.

Good Deeds Awards A Major Success

Rabbi Perl and the 2006 awardees

On a sunny Tuesday afternoon, May 16, 2006, more than 600 people congregated at the Supreme Court of Mineola, NY to witness some very deserving teenagers receive the “Good Deed Award.”

“The Good Deed Award” is the brain child of Rabbi Anschelle Perl, director of NCFJE Long Island. Since much of publicity that teens get these days is negative, Rabbi Perl was looking for a way to focus the spotlight on children who are doing the right thing and give them public endorsement and credit – and so Good Deed Awards were created.

Oholei Torah’s Ground Breaking Event And Gala Banquet This Isru Chag Shavuos

As Oholei Torah prepares for its upcoming Annual Dinner together with a Ground Breaking Ceremony, we recall the special attention given to this affair in earlier years by the Lubavitcher Rebbe. Then, as now, putting together a dinner to raise funds for the institution was no small feat. Rabbi Dovid Deitsch, who was known as the “Tatteh of Oholei Torah,” would seek out friends and acquaintances from the business world to participate in the festive evening to benefit the yeshiva. Once, R’ Deitsch suggested to the Rebbe that instead of investing so much time and effort into the dinner, he would volunteer to raise the funds from his friends by telephone. “I am prepared to collect the same sum of money without the effort,” he told the Rebbe. The Rebbe replied in the negative: “Ah dinner Darf Men Hoben – A dinner we must have,” he said.

Each year the organizers of the dinner look to bring new vitality and energy to the occasion. This year we honor Mr. and Mrs. Yeshaya and Sarah Boymelgreen, whose abundant generosity and constant support has made this dinner a reality.

Delivery Men Get Stuck In Elevator for Nearly an Hour

One of the men trapped crawls to safety.

2 men delivering groceries from the Colel Store to an apartment in 675 Empire Blvd got stuck in the elevator for nearly an hour. The elevator, which was known to get stuck, had just recently been repaired and still got stuck, trapping the 2 men in the hot elevator car between the third and second floor.

Apparently 911 had been called but did not respond for nearly a half an hour, for an unknown reason, that’s when resident called Shomrim who arrived on the scene and got FDNY to respond, who in turn broke open the elevator doors and freed the 2 men. B”H both men were ok, and were offered cold water by the residents which they gladly accepted.

Families line room to kiss Torah as it arrives at Chabad house

Munster, IN — On a day when many Americans reflected in sorrow on lives lost, one group took a day to celebrate.

Music and singing could be heard for blocks along Ridge Road on Monday as the Chabad Lubavitch of Northwest Indiana welcomed its new Torah scroll. The ceremony began with a procession from Grove Park to the Chabad house on Ridge Road in Munster.

Perhaps the most noticeable aspect of the festivities was the spirit behind the smiling faces of participants young and old. Rabbi Eliezer Zalmanov said the Torah is significant not only as the first the Chabad owns, but also for the community the Chabad house represents.

Another Elevator Mugging on Empire Blvd.

441 Empire Blvd.

At around 4:00 this afternoon a woman was held up in an elevator, the incident took place inside 441 Empire Blvd. The woman who hardly speaks English, was in the elevator with a stroller and four children, along with a black male. The black male demanded that the woman give him her money, threatening that if not he will hurt her children. The woman looked at him not understanding what he wanted. The mugger then getting frustrated just stuck his hands into her purse and grabbed stuff including money and ran.

Police were called, but bystanders who know the woman called Shomrim to come and help the woman with the report. Shomrim members then canvassed the area in search for the Mugger, but couldn’t locate him. The woman was then taken to the Precinct to look at mug shots to see if she can identify the mugger.

It’s important that residents should know that this is a problem riddled building with numerous incidents related to it, starting with the stone that was thrown at a car, to the member of Anash that was walking past pushing a stroller with his child when a stone came out one of the windows and B”H had just missed him, and this isn’t the first time such an incident had taken place in an elevator Click Here for that story.

As Popularity of Mikvah Use Grows, So Do Standards

Rivka Chaya Berman – Lubavitch.com
Members of the mikvah supervisory board at the new mikvah in the East Hampton

Of the 200 mikvahs in the United States, 90 exist under the auspices of Chabad Lubavitch centers. With another ten Chabad mikvahs to break ground within the next twelve months, Chabad’s stake in maintaining the ritual central to Jewish family life, already monumental, is growing. In response, the Central Committee of Chabad Lubavitch Rabbis created a Mikvah Board to supervise mikvah construction and maintenance.

Chabad couple is busy ‘repackaging’ Judaism

Fights here, Fights there, Fights everywhere!

Chris McKenna – Times Herald-Record

Monroe, NY — They aren’t asking people to become Orthodox Jews like themselves. For that matter, they don’t like separating members of a common faith into the usual Orthodox, Conservative and Reform camps.

Pesach and Chana Burston just want to produce better Jews.

The Burstons arrived in Orange County two years ago as emissaries of a Hasidic movement known as Chabad-Lubavitch, based in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn.

Burglar To Get 5 To 9 Years in Prison

As we have reported 2 weeks ago about a burglar that broke into a building on Union St. and assaulted one of the tenants, we have recently learned that he had gotten a plea bargain which will get him 5 to 9 years in prison, probably the harsher 9 years due to his extensive criminal record.

It is important to note that this criminal had just been released 2 months ago from serving a 12 year jail sentence for assault and robbery as well.

Part Of a Tree Collapses Over Shabbos

Sometime during Shabbos a large part of a tree came crashing down on Carroll St. between Brooklyn and Kingston, the part of the tree blocked off the sidewalk and B”H didn’t injure anyone and did not cause any damage to parked cars. Apparently this collapse was due to the rain we had over Shabbos.
