Fights here, Fights there, Fights everywhere!

Monroe, NY — They aren’t asking people to become Orthodox Jews like themselves. For that matter, they don’t like separating members of a common faith into the usual Orthodox, Conservative and Reform camps.

Pesach and Chana Burston just want to produce better Jews.

The Burstons arrived in Orange County two years ago as emissaries of a Hasidic movement known as Chabad-Lubavitch, based in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn.

For decades, Chabad has dispatched thousands of young, zealous couples like the Burstons all over the world to nurture Judaism wherever it can be found. Their movement is as outward-looking as the Satmar Hasidim of Kiryas Joel are insular. They want to inspire fellow Jews, whatever they call themselves.

While adhering to the strict, literal Judaism of the Hasidim in their own lives, Chabad emissaries – or shlichim – are accommodating toward the assimilated Jews with whom they work.

“Our philosophy is, we’re there to serve Jewish communities, regardless of background,” says Pesach, a 29-year-old rabbi. “Why create barriers and distinctions when people have so much in common?”

In their short time in Orange County, he and his wife have built a dedicated following with their inclusive approach and blur of activities, from Hebrew schools and summer camps to weekly “Kabbalah and Chicken Soup” gatherings at their spacious Monroe home. Celebrations like their Purim party in March can draw upwards of 150 people to the local American Legion hall.

Soon, they could establish an even larger Chabad presence in Orange County. They’re planning a 20,000-square-foot building off Gilbert and High streets in downtown Monroe that would become a permanent home for their expanding activities. It would also hold a synagogue.

Thus far, the only friction the Burstons have encountered is with a rival Chabad group in Goshen, led by Rabbi Yakov Borenstein and his nephew, Meir.

The elder Borenstein, who has represented Chabad in Poughkeepsie for about 20 years, claims he placed his nephew in Goshen to do outreach and that the Burstons are usurpers with no right to the Chabad name. Both groups, the Burstons and the Borensteins, hold similar activities and call themselves Chabad of Orange County.

Occasionally, this otherwise obscure rivalry has spilled into the pages of the Times Herald-Record, where the Borensteins have placed ads asserting their legitimacy and distancing themselves from the Burstons’ building plans in Monroe.

Chabad headquarters sides with the Burstons in this turf battle.

“We are particularly pained that a small, irresponsible group is subjecting the good people of Orange County to unnecessary confusion,” said Zalman Shmotkin, a spokesman for the movement. “The only authorized Chabad-Lubavitch representatives in Orange County are Rabbi Pesach and Chana Burston.”

One February night, guests sit around a dining room table in the Burston home, picking at dried fruits as Pesach lectures about the Jewish holiday of Tu B’Shvat, which celebrates the flowering of Israel’s earliest-blooming trees.

The young rabbi, sitting at the head of the table in a light blue Oxford shirt with the sleeves rolled up, handles his audience with skill: When eyes wander, he ropes listeners back to attention with a joke, a surprising pop-culture reference, an analogy from his own life.

A fire flickers in the fireplace. Guests smile as 3-year-old Duvy Burston scampers into the room in his jammies. Everything in the room radiates warmth.

“The Burstons are wonderful people to be doing outreach work,” Michelle Dixler, one of the guests that evening, says later. “They are warm and friendly. They are nonjudgmental. They have a very welcoming attitude. I feel very comfortable with them.”

The couple came to Orange County in 2004 to establish what is essentially a Chabad franchise. Pesach was from Crown Heights, born and raised there among the Lubavitch Hasidim. Chana was from Buffalo, raised in a non-Orthodox household that embraced Chabad after her father met one of its local rabbis.

Pesach and Chana met while working for separate Chabad organizations in Los Angeles and Beverly Hills, Calif. After testing the waters in Florida, California and Seattle, the Burstons rented a house in Woodbury’s upscale Brigadoon development and began organizing events for local Jews.

The luster of the operation they have developed in that short time – despite minimal financial support from Chabad headquarters – is striking. Their literature is colorful, professional and expensive. Their activities are elaborate and creative.

The Burstons’ success and expansion plans probably cause a twinge of anxiety within Monroe’s Reform and Conservative temples, whose leaders would rather not lose members and donors to Chabad. Some of the couple’s most fervent admirers – those who go to the “Kabbalah and Chicken Soup” dinners and underwrite Chabad holiday parties – belong to Congregation Eitz Chaim and Monroe Temple Beth-El.

The rabbis from those two temples preferred not to speak for publication about Chabad.

The Burstons, for their part, don’t view themselves as competition. They say they deliberately set up programs that weren’t already available.

“We’re not doing anything that we don’t feel is filling a void,” Chana says.

But the large turnout at their gatherings and the comments of their supporters make clear that the Burstons have “repackaged” Judaism, as they put it, in an appealing way for a broad range of Jews, whether affiliated with a temple or not.

“Chabad really knows how to zero in on what really interests people,” says Iris Sandow, whose family belongs to Temple Beth-El but also participates in Chabad events. “It’s easier to relate to Chabad on a spiritual level than the traditional synagogues.”

What is Chabad? Chabad-Lubavitch is a large movement of Hasidic Jews that originated in the Belarus town of Lubavitch in the late 18th century. “Chabad” is a Hebrew acronym that means wisdom, understanding and knowledge.Often called just Chabad or Lubavitch, the movement is based in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn and is known for its aggressive outreach, a campaign waged by young couples dispatched around the world as emissaries or shlichim. There are more than 4,000 emissary families worldwide, working in places as unlikely as the Congo. The organization estimates that nearly 1 million children attend Chabad schools, camps and holiday programs.Since its last rebbe, Menachem Mendel Schneerson, died in 1994, the movement has splintered over one faction’s insistence that Schneerson was the Messiah.

Since the Burston’s run the official Chabad of Orange (Chabad.org), Borenstein does not have a leg to stand on. Is any one investigating how he came about ? It sounds like he is making trouble for that area. I know you have to go through proper channels to be an official Chabad, it doesn’t sound like Borenstein has done this.

Since when is Zalmen Shmotkin the one to decide who is a legitimate shliach and who is not? As far as I know your job expertise is chabad.org- computers, not halachah. Halachah dictates who is legitimate, and when people refuse to
follow halachah and just put people into other people’s shetach without any din v’cheshbon and against all rules of mentschlichkeit and common human decency , they definitely have no legitimacy.

  • Moish / Eretz Yisroel

Beatiful article. It’s very well balanced.
The journalist could’ve centered and spiraled around all what’s negative but didn’t.

I know the infighting aspect that it brings out is very sad and (as my experience working with Tza"ch can attest) very common. But still the good will always shine through

  • chaim

please explain me why the main shailiach in the area in bourstein, not aguach?
    money talks
    thank you

  • Website loves politiccs

looks like they did not last long in their previous places. Hmmm seems like they dont get along with anybody. Also nice to see how they met.

Btw webbie why bring in shmutz into an otherwise very nice website???

  • Labavitcher

That was a beautiful article, shame that the mushrooms are mentioned at all, all they do is make a Chillul Hashem, so long live the Rebbes Shluchim and don’t be Nispuel from the Misnagdim, whatever they call themselves.

  • Yossi

Hey Pesach great article! I especially like the light blue Oxford shirt" part.
    Keep it up Pesach!!!!!

  • Eli

I’ve heard from contemporaries of mine that the Borensteins tend to harass their so called rivals, they use threatening tactics to intimdate those who work for the Shluchim of Orange County, Rabbi Pesach and Chana Burston, and the Shluchim themselvs.

Were is our leadership? How can we let this happen?

  • Chavi

One time I went to the Burstons to work for them and another Rabbi came and was screaming at me and he was making such an embarrassment for all the Yiddin around there, I didn’t know anything what was going on but I was later explained that Rabbi Borenstein was upset that there was Shluchim there and that’s why he was screaming at me for no reason.

  • Shchune2006

a shame that we have peole that just like to fight and hang our dirty laundry in public I mean come on guys if u have a dissagreement why condem the other party and put it t in the NEWSPAPAER?! that means that the Yidden wont want to have to do with chabad at all!
Not u and not the chabad that u are condeming R’L.

  • Actually

Borenstein was there before the burstons arrived, and it was the burston who was stirring up some politics… juts to set the record streight… they are both good people however, and the more the better.

  • Anonymous

Dear "not from around here" unfortunately what u write is correct it is painful to see the atrocities that the Borensteins have subjected the Burstons to.

  • Sholom Peace

Good going Burstons! You are doing wonderful work and keep it up. Borensteins – fighting will get you nowhere. If Burston is Chabad and you aren’t, why don’t you take the route of Sholom and back off. Think about the good of the community. I’m sure the animosity between the two groups isn’t doing any justice. When a situation like this arises, you need to look at the larger picture and decide that fighting is not worth it! Maybe you can try being "legal" shluchim in another city.

  • New Yorker

The whole situation, any time it happens is tragic.
But to "not from around here", do you have any idea how long Borenstein has been in the area? For many years! He is not the new guy on the block, Burston is – he was stuck in there just to make Borenstein’s life difficult because of an old dispute

  • Aliza

Hey Chana! keep up the great work up there in Orange County! and thanks soooo much for the great Shabbos we had togather!!

  • Avi

a Kiddush Hashem (except for the opposition – misnagdim but who cares about them) in honor of Shavous

  • Joey

yo Pesach hi from Cali! nice artical keep up the good Shlichus! Yo the man.

  • Crown he

I agree with you "Shchune2006" 100% . its a big shame, the burstons are such nice people and all they care about is to bring people closer to Yiddishkait etc. I wont mention anymore about anyone els but you can see for yourself from the artical etc.

  • yossel

I was under the immpersion that Rabbi Rubin was in charge of Chabad in upstate New York? NOT Borenstein!
How can a Chosid go and fight witha a shliach and threaten him and harras him and put articals in the newspaper? no matter what bothering another jew is never allowed, but then again who cares about such rules if u are OPENLY FIGHTING THE REBBES SHLUCHIM?

  • Anonymous

The stories that come out of orange county , stoies I heard from freinds that Borenstein will stop at nothing to do distrution, adds in newspapers Making a Chaillul hashem

  • SG

Someone needs to find out who is in charge, and who asked these people to open their Chabad Houses. Everyone answers to someone.

  • SHOLOM BER

Okay everyone, let me CLARIFY for all of those with different views on who was there first. RABBI RUBIN is under CHABAD and he has the AUTHORITY (under Aguch’s auspices) so therefore he DECIDES WHOM TO HIRE AND WHOM TO FIRE. Once BORENSTEIN was FIRED, he has NO SAY in who is Chabad of Orange County.
For those of you who choose to ignore Aguch’s policies, thus ignoring the above mentioned facts, (att: ACTUALLY) if you’re going to decide who is legit based on who came first, I have a slight correction for you, BURSTON moved to Orange County FIRST. If anything, Borenstein stirred up trouble.

  • Mordy

    To New Yorker,

I am sorry but you got it all wrong! Pesach Burstone was sent to a place that did not have a Shliach, Orange county did not have a Shliach only after the Burstons came did Bornstein Hameshuge bring down his nephew who seeks only destruction and evil, all while he plays Mr. innocent its discussing to see…..I cant write any more.

a)rabbis Osdoba AND Rabbi Shwei both wrote letters to the burstons NOT to move out there b/c that territory belongs to rabbi Borenstein;and that NOBODY is allowed to help the burstons b/c they r in violation of Halacha.
b)rabbbi borenstein is there for 19 years allready, burston moved there last year
    c) it is the burstons who went to the Borensteins channuka party to make a grand Chillul hashem, to the Borensteins purim arts and crafts, the tuesday lunch and learn in order to fight the Borensteins
d)allthough the burstons live in monroe they opened an office in Goshen where the borensteins live\
e)the Burstons wrote a letter to the Goshen city hall to inform them that the Borensteins shul is in violation with the zoning laws (in hebrew we call that MESIRA).
f)the borensteins have on average double or triple turnout to their events then the burstons do.(just check the picture gallery at their website chabadorangecounty.com)

  • Chabadnik

The Borenstein’s are not mentchlach. They deal with the situation by harassing, harassing and more harassing. The threaten, insult, embarass the Burstons. Most of all, they shame Chabad’s name and bichlal, they make a huge Chilul Hashem. Obviously, they’re not out to be mekarev Yiddin, they’re just power hungry. You’ll never hear any of these things coming from the Burston family. Whoever knows Pesach, knows he’s a mentch and very personable.

  • Mendy

I dont know who is right or wrong , but based on caracter I prefer to stickck with pesach Burston he is a person with class versus Borenstien whom I see coming to 770 to wine about what goes on in Orange county. I though he has a "Shlichus" to do? how does he have the time to come to 770 and talk to everyone baout his problems. Oh Maybe his Shlichus is to just bother other people/Shluchim. Have you ever been to his Chabad house? barleya Minyan after 20 years!

you are doing a fabulous job and I hope that you don’t have to face any more obstacles.

  • check it out firsthand

great article, and great pr for all those living in crown heights. but by reading all the comments, i can see that none of you have ever been up in orange county to see with your own eyes what is taking place over there!

    see who the community supports.

and WHO is the one trying to fight in the papers all the time.

do you happen to know that when there was a town meeting to discuss zoning with regard to meir boronstien, present was the church, lehavdil, the conservtive, reform, but there was only one person to object to meir opening a shul. can you guess who that was????????????

  • Hasagas gevul

Chana is continueing what her father started. Her father encouraged Greenberg to break away and open a chabad house in an area that belonged to another shaliach, and now she is doing the same. The apple does not fall far from the tree

    Dear SG,

it is very simple who is in charge, (Merkoz/Aguch and) the head Shluchim are the ones that are in charge of which Shluchim go out to were etc. the whole notion of anyone considering going out on Shlichus while not under the head Shliach is unheard of and it is something that hasn’t ever been seen.

  • set the record straight

    To Shchune2006
For the record, the borensteins were paying for full page ads condemning the burstons etc. which caused this situation to become public…talking about hanging dirty laundry.

  • yanky

borenstien is always in crown heights, i wonder if he is ever upstate!
his nephew meir is the son of r’ elya borenstien of italy, who started the second kinus against merkoz.
borenstien did the mistake of starting up with tzach, so tzach took him off the shlichus list.
zalman shotkin spoke to the paper as he is the spokesman of chabad, but the fight is with tzach, they control NY state.

  • Important clarification

I read the article on line (recordonline.com) and I don’t understand why on this website, under the title it says "Fights here, fights there, fights everywhere"- That is NOT part of the article! The reporter didn’t write that. The titke is soley positive, "Chabad Couple is Busy Repackaging Judaism."

  • bewildered

I have no idea who this Burston guy is but knowing Borenstein from yeshiva he can make a Chilul Hashem solo without any need for props , the question is not how can HQ be so inept as to let this go on but how could they let such a guy go out in the first place , they send him out or ok him to go out and then cry when he bites every one in the ass !!!

  • A Freind

Itchik you’re from the few normal people I know tell your son-in-law [Meir] to stop!
(Meileh Yankel he’s certifiably insane, but Meir????)

  • inside story

To Shneer2006: The Burstons never bring up the controversy, they always refuse to comment when asked about it and suggest to people to call Chabad Headquarters. The reporter only knew about the "conflict" because the borensteins continuously place defamatory ads in the papers about the Burstons. They brought it to the public and especially the paper. "What goes around comes around."

  • A Yid

Yankel Borenstein has been up state for 20 years, merkos didnt like his politics so they took him off the list, no din torah vichulu, ( btw they tried doing the same thing to his brother in italy, but gershon mendel gorelick wouldent let) until there is a proper din torah, nobody can claim that borenstein dosent belong there.

  • David

The Borenstein always harass the Burstons , I never saw Peasch harass anyone I never saw him even raise his voice(the guy cant hurt a fly) Pesach and Chana are real “Mentchin” Yankel and Meir are Pushet Rishueem

  • CH- Rocks

My cousin worked there two years ago right when Pesach came down he told me (I jus got off the phone with him) that Pesach acted in a normal classy way while the bornies did anything under the sun to try and stop them and when that didn’t work they used tactics “THAT EVEN GOYIM DON’T USE!!!” Those were his words

  • Bucher

Fact on the ground Pesach Burston never put an add in the newspaper, never aid a bad word to anyone about Borenstein.

  • To mendy

believe me, we see the burstons in CH just as much as the borensteins, so please don’t create facts… Borenstein does a fine job, unfortunetaly his inlaws aren’t millioners… that’s it!

  • Its all about the money....

The one with more money is always heard, and needless to say who married into a wealthy family…. that same person is busy hiring bochurim and girls (which I will not name) to do all the "dirty" work (i.e. teaching people, programs, preparing purim parties etc…) while they are too busy "directing" things from their mansion……..

  • Grand Rabbiner

Rabbi Osdaba and Rabbi Schwei wrote letters. Who cares they both have no credibilty anymore and and Scwhei hates merkas and so does Osdaba. The Rebbe never let them mx into shluchim issues only local CH issues which we all see how ell they are doing together.

at the end someone got up and read a letter from burstin saying how they shouldbt pass this law and give the permis

happens to be that rubin is out of his mind this is not the place for it but the fact is hes starting up with all the shluchim

i know alot of older shluchim who he started a fight with

he never had anything to do with borenstien he never got him to come down he was hired by the rebbe 20 years ago and so rubin has no say who should be there and who shouldnt let rubin do some shlichus first in albanay before he looks around and says whos a shliach and whos not

  • fact

aguch made rubin a head shliach just so he can throw borenstien out

everyone knows the entire system is one big joke

  • WONDER

WHEN YOU CHECK THE BURSTONS IN CHABAD.ORG THEY LIVE IN GOSHEN WHEN YOU CHECK THEIR ADDRESS THEY LIVE IN MONROE 25 MINUTES AWAY

I WONDER WHY THEY DO THAT

BECAUSE THE BORENSTIENS LIVE IN GOSHEN SO THEY MAKE AS IF THEY LIVE THERE TO
ITS TIME TO BE HONEST AND STAY IN MONROE

I HOPE THE SATMERS GET TO YOU SOON

  • Try It

Try this, call Pesach Burston on a the phone and ask him to comment.

Then call Borenstein on the phone and ask him to comment.

Now tell me who is normal who is not.

Now tell me who you trust and who you don’t.

Now tell me who sounds like a Shliach and who doesn’t.

Now who tell me who said something bad against another Jew and who wont?

  • rabbi meir keep it up

its good to see how most of you are talking and dont even know where orange county is

thats what the burtsons try to do to destroy another good couple who is doing shlichus

the borenstiens have the biggest support there

how many shluchim do u know that have a camp of over 60 kids in their first year? have a minyan almost every shabbos in the first year? have 300 people coming to their purim events? buying a huge building in the center of town in the first year?

not many while the burstons are trying to get together 10 people for their megilah reading because they are to busy bad mouthing and fighting the borenstines will keep being matzliach

the burstons are only there bec of the money from the rasha gelman if not for that they wouldnt last

this article and its comments are just TZAR and AGMAS NEFESH for the Rebbe. And to you farmers out there – that dont know either side of the story – please keep to your farming – till you go on shlichus you (and even after) you cant beging to understand a situation"

In the same comment that you write that this artical just brings TZAR and AGMAS NEFESH for the Rebbe, you make it a point to call all the people that are not Shiluchim- Farmers.
Not everybody was sent on Shilchis by the Rebbe/Aguch/Mekos, but that does not make them any less.
I myself do all I can to reach out and help anyone in any way (there are Jews that need help in Crown Heights), I even send (when I can) money to some of my friends who went out on shilchise.
You have no write to put anybody down.
And besides if not for Farmers you would not have milk, meat, fruit etc…
[Just because some of our fellow farmers are bad does not mean we all are]

  • One- sided story

It’s hard to beleive that anyone would be able to write anything against Pesach and Chana Burston. Everyone knows they are an amazing, inspirational and extremely well-liked couple. As shluchim, they are warm, peace loving people- just look how everyone loves them on their website- and LOOK AT THIS NEWSPAPER ARTICLE!!! How many shluchim after only 2 years get an articlel ike this written about them by huge reporter in the biggest paper in the area on a Sunday?
I happen to know that the Burstons have never ever none anything or said anyting against the borensteins- the Burstons are people of high character and way above that. Pesach and Chana focus on doing good work and I admire how they NEVERresponded to all the public defamatory ads that were put into the newspaper with both Yankel and Meir’s names. Even with all the harrassment, look how Pesach and Chana shine.

  • ATTENTION CROWNHIEGHTS.INFO STOP MACHL..

…MACHLOKES, WHY DO YOU PUT THIS ON THIS GREAT WEB SITE?!
MACHLOKES CAUSES TZORES TO OUR COMMUNITY, AS THE REBBE SAID, AND R. JACOBSON SPOKE ABOUT THIS SHABBOS ACHDUS IN 770, SO PLEASE TRY AND UNITE CROWN HEIGHTS NOT THE OPPOSITE.
