UPDATE: Hollywood rejects Chabad offer

South Florida Sun-Sentinel

Hollywood, FL – After rejecting a proposal that would’ve ended a federal lawsuit accusing them of discriminating against a synagogue, city commissioners Wednesday night said they planned to keep negotiating to avoid a trial that could come next week.

The settlement rejection came after more than a dozen Hollywood Hills residents took turns urging city leaders to continue their efforts to oust the Hollywood Community Synagogue Chabad Lubavitch from a residential neighborhood.

Commissioners then announced they would reconvene today at 1 p.m. for negotiations with Chabad officials.

At around 1:00am Efraim Klien (47) HY”D was driving down Schenectady Ave. when eye witnesses claim to have heard and seen 3 shots being fired at the minivan Efrayim was driving, after the shots the van swerved and turned into Carroll St. where he was weaving and was all over the road and went running into parked cars from the beginning of the block until hitting one car in the middle of the block bringing the car to a complete stop.

The minivan then burst into flames and 2 bystanders ran to the van and got the injured victim out of the vehicle and put out the flames. At this point Hatzalah members were already showing up on scene and began performing basic life support, at which time a Hatzalah Ambulance and a FDNY Ambulance had shown up, Hatzalah transported the victim to KCH where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

On report of the passing to all the units of Hatzalah, Shomrim & Police, snow began falling and quickly a layer covered the street only to make any search harder for police in any effort in finding any clues as to what had happened tonight.

Police are still trying to figure out what happened, and where the victim was originally shot, in a brief conversation with a ranking officer on scene he said that Police are looking into the possibility that the victim was shot on Union St. & Schenectady Ave. but still have no idea where he was shot.

The victim who was 42 years of age leaves behind a son who he was going to marry off next week and a daughter who is currently in Israel.

Police have initiated a Level One Mobilization in which every extra hand is called in to search for suspects, or in this case to search for any evidence of a suspect. As of now there has been no progress made.

Update On The Transit Strike: Headed To Court

1010WINS

With a promised strike less than 48 hours away, the Transport Workers Union was planning to seek a court order Sunday against the Metropolitan Transportation Authority — claiming that the agency was breaking state law by demanding changes in pension benefits for new hires, a union lawyer said.

There were no reports of progress following talks between the two sides on Saturday, and commuters were making plans for a possible shutdown of the nation’s largest mass transit system at the height of the Christmas rush.

According to Walter Meginniss Jr., the union planned to file the complaint with the state’s Public Employment Relations Board, The New York Times reported on its Web site Sunday.

Update on the looming Subway Strike

For the time being there is no Transit strike, but the possibility that there may be one is still a possibility. MTA officials and Labor Union officials stayed at the table till well passed the 12:00am dead line, they were there till 4:30am and an announcement on what is going on is scheduled for 6:00am.

If there were to be a strike, it would severely disrupt the ability for all those that go out on Mivtzoim every Friday, since the police are going to enact a rule that if there were to be a strike, the only way to get into a city would be in a car with 4 or more people. And due to the fact that Shabbos comes in very early, walking isn’t really a practical option.

For the time being (5:30am) all the buses and trains are still running properly.

UPDATE: The union leader just announced that there will be a series of strikes starting with private bus lines. This is a very cryptic message but what I think we can safely assume that all buses and trains will be running properly.

UPDATED: Tzivos Hashem’s 25th anniversary and Hachnosas Safer Torah

Yesterday [Sunday] a dinner was held in honor of the Tzivos Hashem Organizations 25th anniversary, and the ceremony of the completion of a Sefer Torah written for the Shul in the museum and was donated by Dr. Esther Benenson “The mother of Tzivos Hashem”. The event was attended by board members and employees of the museum and family, as well as local politicians and our brass of the NYPD’s 71st Precinct.

The event opened up with the completion of the writing of the Sefer Torah, and the dancing with the torah out in the freezing cold around a few blocks. Then the crowd moved back into the museum for a beautiful and delicious buffet dinner with a variety of different food to choose from.

And for the last part of the event, there was a round of special presentations of their work here in the United States and abroad, specifically the USSR, from schools to shelters and orphanages. One of the entertainers was Bruce Adler a world famous singer and entertainer who brought back memories of his childhood and the radio station WEVD the only radio station in Yiddish! Another of the presentations was from the Friendship Circle where 2 special children made a brief speech thanking the organizers and counselors for their work and effort they put into the program and how much it means to them.

An extensive gallery is now online with 160 beautiful pictures of the event! Enjoy!

UPDATE: Bandits rob Brooklyn post office

NY Newsweek

Three armed bandits stormed into a Crown Heights post office just before dawn Tuesday, forcing workers to the ground, then running off with at least several thousand dollars, according to the U.S. Postal Service.

As the suspects fled the James E. Davis Post Office, they slammed an incoming employee to the ground, but she suffered only a minor shoulder injury, officials said. The facility, closed Tuesday as officials investigated the crime scene, is scheduled to be open Wednesday.

The 5:40 a.m. robbery comes nearly a year after the Foch Boulevard post office in South Ozone Park was robbed.

UPDATE: CH Resident to be deported

China Post

Israel’s attorney general has ordered an Israeli-American deported to the United States due to fears by security forces that he could carry out acts meant to derail Israel’s planned evacuation of 25 Jewish settlements, the Haaretz daily reported Wednesday.

The American, Saadia Hirschkop, 18 from Crown Heights, N.Y., agreed to be deported for 40 days instead of serving jail time for the period, the daily said.
