CROWN HEIGHTS [CHI] — A suitcase – which has been sitting on Eastern Parkway near Brooklyn Avenue for a few days – was called in to 911 as a suspicious package just an hour ago. Police are taking no chances and shut down the entire area, causing traffic mayhem on Erev Shabbos just as school was being dismissed.

Atlanta, GA [CHI] — A column that was recently published in the Atlanta Jewish Times caused an uproar in the American media; the author, Andrew Adler, listed the assassination of President Obama as a possible solution to the standoff between Israel and Iran. Media pundits were up in arms, Jewish groups were quick to denounce the paper and even the Secret Service got involved. But there was another unfortunate misunderstanding regarding the ill-conceived article: the notion that the paper is affiliated with the Chabad movement.
Rabbi Eli Cohen and Chanina Sperlin of the Crown Heights Jewish Community Council were spotted in this photograph at a support rally for Hakeem Jeffries, a Democrat who is launching a bid for congress against 30-year incumbent and fellow Democrat Ed Towns. In is speech, Jeffries swore to defend President Obama, stand up against the Republican party, bring more section-8 housing to the district and secure more funding for the public school system. The Thai police’s capture of a Lebanese-Swedish Hizballah suspect, who was charged Monday, Jan. 16, thwarted a terrorist attack on the Beit Chabad in Bangkok, involving the taking of hostages and blowing up the building. It was to have followed the same lines as al Qaeda’s 2008 assault on the Mumbai Chabad center which killed 8 Israelis and Jews – only more ambitious. A federal appeals court struck down as unconstitutional an Oklahoma anti-Sharia law, which was authored by David Yerushalmi, a Lubavitcher from Phoenix, Arizona. [Update: correction issued in extended article].
A major collision involving three vehicles sent one car into flames on the corner of Eastern Parkway and Nostrand Ave. at 9:25 tonight. The driver, described to be a 45-50 year old male, was pinned inside the burning vehicle. Eventually, they managed to extract him and he was immediately rushed to Kings County Hospital in traumatic arrest; he was later pronounced dead in the emergency room.
