Animal Rights Party leader Marianne Thieme’s plan to introduce a ban on ritual slaughter has failed to make it through the Senate, the upper house of the Dutch parliament. Ms. Thieme withdrew from the debate after intervention by the Agriculture Minister.

On Sunday, a still bearded Matisyahu appeared on the Reality TV Show “Chef Roble and Co” on the Bravo Channel, with his family and a few dozen friends – many from the Crown Heights Community. The show’s host, Chef Roble, was trying to prepare a Kosher meal for the Hassidic reggae-rapper and his guests before he went away for several months on tour this past summer. The name of the episode was “Babysitter in the Kitchen,” which referred to the mashgiach from OK Kosher certification agency.

When Rachel Jacobs first started cooking kosher at the University of Vermont, she encountered an uncommon problem. The university’s Sodexo employees approached her with too much reverence. “They would talk to me from just outside the door,” says Jacobs. “When I asked why, they said, ‘We’re not blessed.’ I had to tell them, ‘Everyone is blessed.’ It’s not about being Jewish, just about keeping the rules.”
