Car Bursts Into Flame on Eastern Parkway, 1 Dead

A major collision involving three vehicles sent one car into flames on the corner of Eastern Parkway and Nostrand Ave. at 9:25 tonight. The driver, described to be a 45-50 year old male, was pinned inside the burning vehicle. Eventually, they managed to extract him and he was immediately rushed to Kings County Hospital in traumatic arrest; he was later pronounced dead in the emergency room.

Another man was treated by EMS at the scene for light injuries, and was later taken to the hospital as well.

Police say it is possible that one of the drivers involved in the MVA fled the scene; the AIS (Accident Investigation Squad) is investigating.

Chessed Shel Emes’ services were not needed in this instance.

Update: More on Crash from NY Daily News

A heroic cop pulled a victim out of a burning vehicle after three cars collided at a busy Brooklyn intersection Thursday night, witnesses said.

But the unidentified man, 51, died a short time later at Kings County Hospital, police said.

The crash happened at Nostrand Ave. and Eastern Parkway in Crown Heights around 9:24 p.m., fire officials said.

A man was driving a Ford sedan as a taxi blew the red light while traveling eastbound on the parkway and crashed into the victim’s car traveling southbound on Nostrand Ave., cops said.

The victim’s car went up into flames and the driver became trapped, the FDNY and witnesses said.

“This black SUV had to be going at least 90 miles per hour,” said an eyewitness who declined to give his name.

“There were big flames. A good Samaritan and a police officer tried to help the guy out,” the shocked bystander said. “They tried, [but] he burned alive. He was dead. He melted.”

John Tyus, who lives nearby, saw the officer drag the man out of the car.

“The car was blazing — the flames were touching the trees,” Tyus said. “The officer was very courageous.”

The driver of the Ford was taken into police custody and charges were pending Thursday night, cops said.

Vermarie Petit-Frere, 26, of Queens, was driving westbound on Eastern Parkway when she was hit by the black SUV, she said.

”I looked down for a split second, then a car hit me,” she said. “It happened so fast, the SUV was going really fast,” she said.

“Then the other car caught on fire – it stated as a flame then just exploded.“

Petit-Frere jumped out of her car and watched the officer desperately try to save the man.

“He looked bad,” she said of the victim. “He was burned up pretty bad. He was lifeless – they were trying to revive him.”

Petit-Frere and her father, Verma, 68, were upset but relieved that she was going to be fine.

”That could had been me,” the woman said. “I’m blessed.”

Update: More on arrest from ABC News

A man is under arrest in Brooklyn after a crash that killed another driver and injured two others.

Police say 29-year-old Jermaine Filmore ran a red light on Eastern Parkway in Crown Heights, slammed into a 2003 Chevy SUV, and then broadsided a 2003 Lincoln Towncar and finally smashed head-on into a 2007 Mitsubishi sedan.

The Towncar burst into flames.

A security guard saw the accident and pulled a 51-year-old driver from the burning vehicle. That driver died from his injuries a short time later.

A 30-year-old man driving the SUV and the 26-year-old woman behind the wheel of the sedan were taken to Kings County Hospital where they were listed in stable condition.

Filmore was arrested on multiple charges including criminally negligent homicide and reckless driving.

Names of the victims have not been released.

BH that Chessed Shel Emes’ services were not needed in this instance! Spoke to someone who saw the fireball, both car were speeding through the intersection. One went through a red light. The other had a green light. who knows which on was killed?
You may have the right of way, but always remember, you share the road with too many lousy, reckless drivers! Always watch out for them.
Be careful. Be safe. Your mother / father / husband / wife / siblings / children and friends all love you!

  • saw it

There was no way the guy would be able to survive it. I was right there 30 seconds after it happened. The flames were so high and the heat was so strong.

Eastern Parkway has always been dangerous. Drivers speed by like a bat out of hell; you’d think they were drag-racing. This isn’t the first or second time there has been a major accident.

Every day I stand at that crosswalk, I imagine something like this happening… it’s my worst nightmare. People speed down this street with no regard for other drivers and pedestrians.

We heard the explosion from my apartment about 1000 feet away; I thought a train had crashed in the tunnel beneath my building, that’s how intense it was. So scary. It shook the whole house.

The news wires got it all wrong. The 29 year old driven the Ford Explorer helped the 51 year old out the burning car. He is trained in First Aid Response. It was not a cop. He was the Security Officer. He was reared ended (the Ford Explorer). You can see pictures in other news wires. He was not the one that ran the red light. If you see the pictures of the Firs Explorer, you will see it was rear end. How did the hero turned villian all of a sudden? People use your sound judgement. Often at times the media puts the cart before the horse just to put a story out there. Once again people use your sound judgement. The so called crazed reckless driver is a law biding citizen. He has a clean record. He is a very ambitious person who has his own business. He is a God fearing person. The media is giving you one dimension to the so called wreckless driver. I am giving you the positive dimension to the person.

I was on eastern parkway and Franklin ave at a redlight, when a black ford S.U.V. flew past me atleast at 85 MPH. The vehicle was running red lights at this speed recklessly. Only to see this man had cost other innocent peoples lifes a short time later. This man needs to be executed!

  • No SUV for me, thanks

I wouldn’t own an SUV if they gave it to me for nothing. They are top heavy and guzzle gas. And they are ugly and encourage people to drive like they own the road.

It was not a cop who pulled the man from the car. There were several cops standing around, doing nothing except talking into their radios while this man died. I was one of the people who helped pull off his burning clothes.

  • be a blessing to others

Does it matter whether the man killed was Jewish or not? He was a human being! Stupid question. Very insensitive.
