While the rest of the South Florida Jewish community was preparing for the upcoming holiday weekend, Mark Rosenberg, Dovi Katz and Chaim Markowitz were up in Tallahassee. They were there to make a presentation to the commanders of the Police Departments and Highway Patrols of the State of Florida. Their topic? Jewish death.

The Gift of Loss: Talking About My Miscarriage

Even though statistics show that many women reading this right now have experienced the loss of a pregnancy, most of these women have not and likely never will publicly address or even mention in private the fact of their miscarriage. Being that this kind of death is a fact of many women’s lives, and that silence and shame only exaggerate the pain, I am opening up about my own miscarriage, which occurred a little over two months ago.

Our Heroes: Rabbi Dov Ber Junik (1927-2005)

Rabbi Duber Junik, fondly referred to by Anash as Reb Berel, was born in Parluki, Russia in 1927 on the 6th of Menachem Av to Horav Naftoli and Mrs. Golda Ita Junik, descendents of the holy Rabbonim, Reb Levi Yitzchok of Berditshev, Reb Pinchos of Koritz and Reb Menachem Nochum of Chernobel. Under the influence of the Rav of the city, HoRav Hillel Solozuvski, Reb Naftoli became acquainted with Chabad Chassidus. Reb Naftoli was a Yireh Shomayim and did not send his children to government schools but brought them up with mesiras nefesh in an underground cheder.

In order to clarify existing regulations requiring all staff members in New York state non-public schools to report suspected incidents of child abuse to the authorities, the New York State Education Department has updated its web page to eliminate any possible ambiguities.

French Police Close In on Toulouse Killer

French police searching for a gunman who shot dead four people at a Jewish school in Toulouse have launched a raid in the north of the city. Two police officers have been injured in the operation, which is reported to have begun before dawn and is ongoing. The suspect, named as Mohammed Merah, is reported to have travelled to fight in Afghanistan and to have been jailed there before escaping in 2008. Latest Update: 1:30 PM
