HUNTINGTON BEACH, CA [CHI] — Last Sunday Hebrew High of Orange County hosted 100 teens for the first summit of its kind. The day of unity and pride brought together high school students from 23 public high schools across southern California. The highlight of the event was an 8th day Jewish Rock concert. Sapir Ohayon (pictured), a 12th grader from Los Al Hebrew High, walked away with VIP tickets to the Clippers vs. Hornets game on April 1st with Chris Paul. The raffle was sponsored by MarcusAdvertising.com of Marina Del Rey.

Cyclist Struck on Albany Avenue

CROWN HEIGHTS [CHI] — At around 6:45pm today, Tuesday a cyclist riding down Albany Ave was stuck by a car, between Crown and Montgomery St. The cyclist, a black man, went flying off his bike and sustained minor injuries. He was treated on the scene and later transported by FDNY EMS to a local hospital. The driver of the car, a Jewish man, was visibly shaken up.

Shliach Discovers Mass Grave of Jews Killed by Nazis

UZHHROD, Ukraine [JTA] — Investigators discovered a mass grave for 200 Jews in a western Ukrainian city. Rabbi Mendel Teichman, the chief rabbi for the city of Uzhhorod, on the country’s border with Slovakia, and the region, in recent weeks had come across an open area with no fence and no headstones in the local Jewish cemetery in recent weeks.

SAFED, Israel — Chabad emissaries mourn the death of 44 year old Mrs. Libby Feigele Malka Shifman of Safed, Israel today after she suffered a severe stroke on Monday morning.

Mrs. Shifman’s is survived by nine children and her husband, Rabbi Aharon Shifman, the director of Chabad activities in the nearby villages of Parod and Shefer. She was the sister of Rabbi Daniel Kaye of Chabad of Sydney, Australia and Rabbi Eli Kaye of Chabad’s Ascent outreach center in Safed, Israel.

Leviev Posts $426 Million in Real Estate Loss

JERUSALEM [JTA] — Russian Jewish billionaire Lev Leviev’s Africa Israel Group announced the largest loss in Israel’s history. The company lost $426 million in 2008, it announced Monday.

Africa Israel, which is 75 percent owned by Leviev, had a net loss of $637 million in the fourth quarter.

Cars Being Towed to Make Room for Mitzvah Tanks

CROWN HEIGHTS [CHI] — This morning, Tuesday, police department tow trucks were seen towing cars parked in the no parking zones, designated for Mitzvah Tanks thats will participate in the parade. There are no parking signs posted on President St between Kingston and Albany Ave and Kingston between Carroll and President St.

Siberian City Celebrates Restoration of Central Synagogue

After a 2004 fire nearly destroyed its historic synagogue, the Jewish community of Irkutsk, Russia, spent four years restoring it to its former glory.

Members of Irkutsk, Russia’s central Jewish community spent the first Shabbat since the reopening of their 130-year-old synagogue in a state of disbelief. According to Chabad-Lubavitch Rabbi Aharon Wagner, the Siberian city’s chief rabbi, the community has come a long way since a 2004 fire destroyed almost all of the historic shul.

“The community didn’t believe that the synagogue would be rebuilt,” said Wagner. “It was like a dream.”

Salmonella Worries Prompt Pistachio Recall

FRESNO, CA [AP] — A Central California company is recalling about 1 million pounds of pistachios over concerns of possible salmonella contamination.

Food safety officials are looking through Setton Farms’ plant in rural Tulare County to see if it could lead them to the source of the contamination.

Moshe Gutnick took the Mizrachi Synagogue, his employer, to the NSW Supreme Court yesterday for an urgent hearing ahead of a proposed meeting last night to make him redundant.
