CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn [CHI] — Snow started falling at about 11:00pm last night, cloaking Crown Heights in nice thick layer of white snow by the time residents woke up this morning. A total of about 5 inches of snow accumulated so far, and we can get as much as 9 inches.

CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn [CHI] — This week, renovations have started on the Crown Heights Rec[reation] Center’s pool. The pool has been cleaned spotless. New grout is being layed. A beautiful brand new locker room is being built featuring new showers, hundreds of new lockers, and plenty of space. More to come very soon. We will keep you updated as work progresses.

Snow combined with freezing temperatures are causing very hazardous driving conditions, with snow freezing and turning into sheets of ice.
There were well over 20 reported accidents in Crown Heights and the vicinity alone. Motorists take care and caution while driving tonight.

What is a Sholom Zochor?
It is customary to make a party or get-together for friends and family on the first Friday night (Shabbat) after a baby boy is born. This is called a “Sholom Zochor,” loosely translated as “a time for wishing peace to the male child.”
The Sholom Zochor is usually held in the home of the newborn following the Shabbat meal. Refreshments are served and words of Torah are shared. This gathering is used an opportunity to publicly thank God for the baby’s successful entrance to the world. The gathering also celebrates the newborn’s first Shabbat, since the baby must experience the sanctity of Shabbat before he can be circumcised.
In addition, the Midrash relates that a child is taught Torah in the womb, and then forgets it at birth in order that he toil to learn it again. The Sholom Zochor is meant as a consolation of sorts for having forgotten the Torah. For this reason many people serve beans or chickpeas at the Sholom Zochor, since these are foods served at the house of a mourner.

HOUSTON, TX [CHI] — Chabad Lubavitch Center, the Texas Regional Headquarters under the directorship of Rabbi Shimon Lazaroff, has recently announced the acquisition of approximately two acres of land adjacent to the current one acre facility. The center, currently undergoing a major expansion and renovation will now blossom to a complete three acre campus in the middle of an urban Jewish area of southwest Houston.
We would like to wish Mazal Tov to Nissy Gansbourg (Montreal, Canada) and Chanie Matusof (Madison, WI) on their engagement.

CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn [CHI] — A number of Shomrim members responding to a call were ambushed and gang assaulted. The incident took place earlier tonight, Motzoai Shabbos, when Shomrim got the call about a dispute inside 749 Eastern Parkway, members arrived on scene and began sorting out the incident when a large gang converged on the room and trapped the members inside.
As the situation began getting out of hand Shomrim members called for backup and for police assistance. The crowd then started throwing punches and assaulting the members.
