Chief Rabbi of Dnepropetrovsk Visits Rural Communities

Nipol, Ukraine -– In the near future, Chief Rabbi of Dnepropetrovsk Region Shmuel Kaminetsky shall be visiting all Jewish communities in the region. During his visits, which shall take place over the next three months, he will be providing assistance to numerous smaller communities in order to promote Jewish life at the local level – morally, administratively, and in terms of both infrastructure and taxation of non-governmental organizations.

Bochur Mugged for his Laptop on Eastern Pkwy

Crown Heights, Brooklyn – “I need to feed my kids” is what a mugger told his victim when he snatched the laptop out of the hands of a Bochur on Eastern Parkway. The incident took place yesterday, Tuesday, at around 3:00pm between New York and Brooklyn.

The Bochur was sitting on a bench on Eastern Pkwy when a tall male black described to be in his mid 20’s pulled the laptop from the lap of the Bochur while pushing him down, the perp was accompanied by what was described as a 10 year old youth, as the perp pulled the laptop for the grasp of the Bochur he said “I need to feed my kids”.

Fireworks, fashion shows, musical performances, an 18-mile “Tour de Brooklyn” bike ride, mini-golf, and a 30th anniversary showing of “Close Encounters of the Third Kind,” starring Brooklyn’s own Richard Dreyfuss were among the activities enjoyed by Brooklynites and visitors alike.

Inter-Religious Conference Held in Russia’s Northern Capital

S Petersburg, Russia — Today in S. Petersburg, the ‘Tavrichesky’ Palace hosted an international inter-parliamentary conference entitled “Intercultural and Inter-Religious Dialogue”, which was attended by a delegation representing the Jewish community and Judaic confession, headed by the city’s Chief Rabbi Menachem Mendel Pewzner and Jewish community Chairman Mark Grubarg.

Participants in this high-profile event included a good number of prominent political, public and religious workers. Among them were Sergei Mironov, the Chairman of Russia’s Federation Council, and Raney van Der Linder, who serves as the Chairman of the Parliamentary Assembly in the Council of Europe.

Old Bridge, NJ — A Bat Mitzvah celebration was held at Bris Avrohom of Old Bridge on Sunday, May 27th. Five girls who had been attending the Chaya Esther Hebrew School program at Bris Avrohom for several years participated in this commencement celebration with their close family and friends in attendance. Previously, each young lady was formally given her Hebrew name in a naming ceremony held during the Torah reading of Shabbat morning services.

Putin Promises Support for a Jewish Museum

Moscow, Russia — Russia’s Chief Rabbi Berel Lazar told President Putin about a plan to set up a Russian Jewish museum, a Museum of Tolerance.

The head of the state has promised to give this initiative not only moral but also financial support, from his personal funds at that.

‘For a few years we have discussed the establishment of a Russian Jewish museum, a Museum of Tolerance. Now the need has become ripe. The aim of this museum is to educate the younger generation for tolerance and respect for one another”, Rabbi Lazar said.

Rabbi Menachem Mendel and Liba Leah Gurary of Crown Heights will IYH be going on Shlichus to Atlanta, Georgia where they will open a new Chabad House for Israelis by the end of the week.

The shluchim were appointed by the head shliach to Atlanta, Rabbi Yosi New.

Rabbi Gurary said “There is no activity in Atlanta for the thousands of Israelis who reside in the city. There is no religious or non-religious organization that provides for the Israelis and that is why a Chabad House is vital for them.”

Rabbi Mendel Gurary is the son of the chief Rabbi of Holon, Rabbi Yochonon Gurary. His siblings are all shluchim in other parts of the world: Berlin, Germany, Holon, Israel, Crakow, Poland.

Vilnius Shul Duel Heats Up Over Restitution

Vilnus, Lithuania — Here in the former home of the Vilna Gaon, the historic center of the anti-Chasidic Litvak movement, two rabbis have been battling for three years for control of the city’s lone synagogue.

Now one of them — Rabbi Sholom Ber Krinsky, a Chabad-Lubavitcher who arrived in 1994 to serve as the community’s rabbi — not only has lost control of the synagogue but is literally scrambling to keep a roof over his and his family’s head.

Krinsky may soon become the only Chabad emissary among the more than 200 in the former Soviet Union to be evicted from his Chabad House premises for non-payment of rent. Krinsky once owned the property but was forced to sell to satisfy his debts.
