Chicago, IL — Over the past thirty years Lubavitch Chabad of Illinois has grown from a one-man operation in a small Chicago apartment to a legion of more than thirty institutions with fifty full time couples providing services for tens of thousands throughout the state.

Birthright Group Celebrates 6 Bar Mitzvas

Tel Aviv, Israel — Six members of a “Birthright” traveling group decided that since they had never yet celebrated their Bar Mitzvas, it would be appropriate to do this while they were still in Israel. They got in contact with Chabad of Tel Aviv, who forwarded them to its Yeshiva, “Chazon Eliyahu”.

Semicha Institute Visit Meat Processing Plant

Vineland, NJ — Students of the ‘Beis Medrash Menachem’ Semicha Institute of Morristown, New Jersey, headed by Rabbi Chaim Schapiro, took a trip to a slaughterhouse in Vineland, New Jersey.

JLI to Expand to 50 New Cities Next Year

Brooklyn, New York — Rabbi Moshe Kotlarsky of Merkoz L’Inyanei Chinuch has recently announced 50 new Shluchim affiliates to join the Rohr Jewish Learning Institute for the coming semester in the fall of 5768. JLI’s central office projects that the new locations will bring the average number of students participating in the program to over 11,000. The expansion represents a 25% growth from the current 200 affiliates, the biggest leap in JLI’s nine year history.

The new affiliates are located throughout the United States and Canada as well as in Australia, Turkey, Panama and Uruguay. Plans are also underway to establish pilot JLI programs in Israel and Russia during the course of next year. The pilot program entails translating materials to Ivrit and Russian and modifying the series to best serve the respective communities. Subsequently, the program will be expanded to include the many Shluchim serving these two large populations.

Chief Rabbi of Dnepropetrovsk Visits Rural Communities

Nipol, Ukraine -– In the near future, Chief Rabbi of Dnepropetrovsk Region Shmuel Kaminetsky shall be visiting all Jewish communities in the region. During his visits, which shall take place over the next three months, he will be providing assistance to numerous smaller communities in order to promote Jewish life at the local level – morally, administratively, and in terms of both infrastructure and taxation of non-governmental organizations.

Bochur Mugged for his Laptop on Eastern Pkwy

Crown Heights, Brooklyn – “I need to feed my kids” is what a mugger told his victim when he snatched the laptop out of the hands of a Bochur on Eastern Parkway. The incident took place yesterday, Tuesday, at around 3:00pm between New York and Brooklyn.

The Bochur was sitting on a bench on Eastern Pkwy when a tall male black described to be in his mid 20’s pulled the laptop from the lap of the Bochur while pushing him down, the perp was accompanied by what was described as a 10 year old youth, as the perp pulled the laptop for the grasp of the Bochur he said “I need to feed my kids”.

Brooklyn, NY — On Saturday, June 2nd and Sunday, June 3rd, BrooklynBest 2007, a Brooklyn Tourism destination event which officially launches Brooklyn’s summer season each year, took to Grand Army Plaza and several of the borough’s cultural institutions. Fireworks, fashion shows, musical performances, an 18-mile “Tour de Brooklyn” bike ride, mini-golf, and a 30th anniversary showing of “Close Encounters of the Third Kind,” starring Brooklyn’s own Richard Dreyfuss were among the activities enjoyed by Brooklynites and visitors alike.
