The Archive – Unlocked

New York, NY — Tribeca Will Remember This One For A While.

Only days after the end of the famed Tribeca Film Festival, Tribeca Cinemas played host to an unusual event. Hosted by eleven Shluchim from throughout the Metropolitan area, it was billed as “A first-hand briefing on the challenges facing the precious audio, video, and photo archives of the Rebbe.”

In the words of one Shlucha, “tonight was a moving reminder of what we are missing since Gimmel Tamuz, and how important the videos are to keeping the Rebbe a part of our lives.”

Each of the Shluchim brought a group of Baalei Batim, who spent an interesting evening watching spectacular clips from JEM’s archive and learning about the tremendous possibilities for the future of the audio, video and photos of the Rebbe.

Billed as “An Exclusive Screening,” it included highlights from the archives.

The briefing section of the program addressed the degradation and ruin faced by multimedia archives around the world. Then, JEM’s Executive Director, Rabbi Elkanah Shmotkin, outlined JEM’s plans for the restoration and preservation of the vital recordings of the Rebbe’s lifetime.

Then, for the first time since JEM’s acquisition of WLCC, he gave a public glimpse into JEM’s intended plans for future public access to the audio, video and photographs of the Rebbe.

The videos produced which were shown throughout the presentation displayed, with no superlatives necessary, the vital treasures in need of preservation.

The screening was followed by a dinner reception – Shluchim, the people whom they brought and the restoration project staff discussed in further details the plans and possibilities for the archive.

“I learned just last week, that everything in the world is created to serve G-d,” said one supporter. “Now I know beyond any doubt why multimedia was created. This collection will create generations of learning and scholarship for the Jewish people.”

We do not comprehend how crucial this is to us. We became so used to the videos coming and coming, its time that we focus in to see where they are coming from and do what we can to help them.

perhaps it would be helpful to supply information on the hows and wheres of donating to help with the effort to both preserve and unlock these priceless archives. We have many baalebatim who find tremendous inspiration in seeing videos of the Rebbe, and would be more than happy to help out.
