The Rebbe says:

1. The first verse of this week’s Torah portion reads, “Im Bechukosai Tay’lay’choo… - If you will go in My statutes (Chukim)…”

Our Sages tell us that when the Torah says, “My statutes (Chukim)”, it isn’t referring to Mitzvos (commandments); it is referring to learning Torah. Consequently when the Torah says, “If you will go in My statutes (Chukim)…” it is telling us that we should labor in Torah.

2. The Rebbe now asks a question on this:

First Lag Ba’Omer Bonfire in the World

SYDNEY, Australia [CHI] — Thursday night, as the opening shot of the Lag Ba’Omer Celebrations around the Globe, there was a Grand Lag Ba’Omer function for the whole family at the Yeshiva in Sydney, 12 Psukim, grand Raffle on Seforim, BBQ, Live Music and dancing, Magic Show, Jumping Castle, Bonfire, Great Family atmosphere. After the formal part of the celebrations, the bochurim sat and farbrenged till the wee hours of the morning.

BROOKLYN, NY — As politicians from around the city gather in Crown Heights today to decry rising racial tensions there, some black and Jewish residents there say elected officials are overreacting.

The rally is the third such news conference to call for calm in response to two assaults involving black and Jewish youth that have some public officials warning of the potential for riots like those that wracked the neighborhood in 1991.

Yet most of the culprits — both black and Jewish — are too young to remember the riots, and some community leaders say they are concerned that it's actually the grown-ups who are stoking a conflict between the groups.

CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn [CHI] — CrownHeights.info has just learned that detectives have made an arrest in connection with the robbery and assault of Alon Sherman which took place last week.

A 14 year old Black teen was brought in just moments ago into the 71st Precinct who is being charges with the robbery, a second accomplice; a 16 year old Black teen was just brought into the station house but has yet to be charged.

“Detectives feel that this was a crime of opportunity,” said a source, he added “that this was based on the injury pattern, which the victim appeared to have sustained when shoved off his bike and slammed his head into a car and the pavement.”

Detectives were able to make the arrest after the teen tried to sell the loot, and through use of the cell phone. The teens do not live in the confines of the 71st Precinct.

CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn [CHI] — In the wake of resent attacks on our community, Officer Vinie Martinos of the 71st Precinct Community Policing Unit, turned to the Jewish community for their input in the Police Athletic League essay competition. The competition is open to all the public and private high schools around the entire New York City.

Entitled: if you were police commissioner for a day, what steps would you take to reduce violent crime and protect all new yorkers? Yosef Abrahamson a student at Darchai Menachem took on the challenge.

Yesterday, Tuesday, Yosef essay was one of the essays picked. We have obtained a copy of his Essay. It is a must read, even from the mouth of a 16 year old, his words and message is strong and clear.

In the aftermath of the miraculous victory and the Jewish arousal that accompanied it, the Rebbe recommended to continue and even increase the tefillin campaign.
The lines above are the opening paragraph of an article by Yrachiel Tilles that appeared on the ascentofsafed.com website. The punch-line of the story, that the bochur and his friends got a cranky old man to agree to put on tefillin because the Australian had mistakenly brought along some stale hamantaschen, caught my attention and I decided to publish this heart-warming story as a “Slice of Life” in L’Chaim.

In a phone conversation with CrownHeights.info Inspector Vega said: “I am unaware of any plans for my transfer as of yet”.

“A Commanding Officers term is typically 2 or 4 years, my last two commands were two years” he said, and then added “I am here in Crown Heights for three years now, and as far as I know and was informed, is that I have another year to go.”
