Israeli Soldiers Carry Letters of Support Into Battle

GAZA — For three hours on Wednesday, the guns went silent in the Gaza Strip. Ignoring military advice to the contrary, Israel momentarily halted its offensive against Hamas targets so that trucks could ferry humanitarian aid to civilians. Israel Defense Force soldiers rested a bit, grabbed a bite to eat, and mustered their strength for the battles ahead.

When they returned to the front, they carried with them letters written by people all over the world and hand-delivered by teams of Chabad-Lubavitch emissaries.

Israeli Mayor Visits Crown Heights

CROWN HEIGHTS [CHI] — Thursday morning, the mayor of Afula, a city in the North of Israel, Mr. Avi Elkabetz visited Crown Heights, just before catching his flight back to Israel. While in Crown Heights the Mr. Elkabetz visited the Rebbe’s room, toured the Jewish Children’s Museum, met with Rabbi’s at OK Kosher and then visited the Ohel.

Video – DEP Warns Homeowners Of Imposters

NEW YORK, NY [NY1] — The Department of Environmental Protection is warning homeowners about people posing as city employees to make money.
The imposters pretend to be workers or contractors of the DEP.

Officials say the fakes usually travel in pairs and claim they need to check the pipes or collect money for overdue water bills.

Alternate Side Parking Rules Suspended Shabbos

The New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) in conjunction with the Department of Sanitation (DSNY) today announced the suspension of Alternate Side Parking (ASP) regulations citywide for Shabbos, January 10 to facilitate snow removal. However, parking meters will remain in effect throughout the City.

RALEIGH, NC — Rabbi Sholom Estrin, assistant rabbi with Congregation Sha’arei Israel, holds a Havdalah candle, lit at the end of the Sabbath to mark the passage from sacred to secular time. Estrin was among those who led a community memorial and solidarity gathering for victims of the Mumbai terrorist attacks. The event at the Chabad Center of Raleigh paid tribute to the more than 170 people who died in the attacks.

The hall closet still has a box of mothballs sitting on the shelf directly over the coatrack. As a result, it still harbors this pungent but otherwise sartorially healthy scent that tells you that the clothes in here are well protected. This is the hallway closet in my mother’s house in Crown Heights in Brooklyn. I’m there often—though not often enough—usually to pick my mom up before Shabbos or drive her back home after Shabbos, but rarely, if ever, am I there to spend a Shabbos there myself these days.

Parents of Injured Soldiers Request: Pray for Their Recovery

The staff of the Chabad’s Terror Victims Project are visiting the soldiers injured by the fighting in Gaza, who are hospitalized in hospitals throughout Israel. In Soroka in Beer Sheva, Beilinson in Petach Tikva, Barzilai in Ashkelon and Shiba in Ramat Gan. We strive to encourage and strengthen the spirit of the injured soldiers , bring them gifts, while giving the families emergency aid.
