Siyum HaShas at 79!

by Yonit Tanenbaum

CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn [CHI] — After nineteen long years of taking it one “Amud” at a time, “Zaidy” Wilansky, 78, celebrated the commendable undertaking of learning the entire Shas in depth.

On Sunday afternoon, the Kolel Tiferes Zekenim met in 770 for a Siyum in honor of Reb Yehoshua Wilansky’s completion of the Shas. “This is something that does not happen very often,” said his 23-year-old grandson, Eli Wilansky. The Siyum was dedicated to Wilansky’s mother, Sara bas Yehoshua, whose Yahrtzeit was on the 23rd of Iyar.

Op-Ed: It’s 3AM… Can you outdo negative with positive?

I can’t sleep, I’m tossing and turning, my mind is racing with all sorts of crazy thoughts. I’m frustrated, upset, and my head is beginning to spin.

I moved to Crown Heights five years ago after me and my wife (from out of town) got married. We loved it here. I work, Daven and shop in Crown Heights. I am your typical “survivor” or simple guy, one that works hard to cover my basic expenses. I’m young, full of energy and already have a small family. I feel that were ever I live I should help, care, give back and create a better community. (I currently volunteer in two local organizations.)

But recently I began to ask myself WHY?

Surveillance Video – Oholei Torah Dorm Robbery

Surveillance video helped Shomrim and the Bochurim quickly identify who their suspect was and foster his arrest. The surveillance system was made possible by a grant from homeland security and was installed by SafeZone24, a local Lubavitch owned company.

A World United in Learning, Lezcus Levi Yitzchak ben Tzirel

On behalf of Levi, we would like to thank all those who said Tehillim and gave Tzedakah for him today. Baruch Hashem, Levi’s health is improving and every day he is becoming stronger. His doctors are optimistic. However, we still need to continue saying tehiilim giving, Tzedakah and learning torah in his honor.

To continue the momentum, and to increase his health, there will be a Shiur for Torah on the night of Erev Shavous, Wednesday evening, May 27, at 9:30pm, with Rabbi YY Jacobson, uniting the whole world in learning.

You can participate and watch the class at www.TheYeshiva.net

Op-Ed: Enough Already!!!

The disputed elections have taken place, and it remains to be seen what will be on June 3rd. If the plaintiffs drop their claim, then these are the people we will live with for the next three years.

What’s particularly disturbing to me in all this are not the disagreements but the vitriol with which they’ve come to be expressed. The comments made on community websites, particularly CrownHeights.Info have been especially nauseating. The wisdom of posting them aside, the feelings revealed by these postings are irrational to the point of borderline dangerous.

Rabbi Osdoba has been vilified in the most vile terms. Therefore I feel a need to express my opinion.

A Couple of Volunteers

Michael Corwin and Julie Ames with Tzvi and Sheva Tauby, co-directors of Ivolunteer.

NEW YORK, NY — He met Sheva and her husband over a traditional Shabbat dinner on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. By the time dessert was cleared, Sheva had a hunch that Michael Corwin, 29, was a perfect match for Julie Ames, a fellow volunteer. Though he had never dated someone through a matchmaker, and later admits that he only followed through “to be agreeable,” Corwin and Ames are now engaged. Sheva, he says, was on the mark.
