When Rabbi Yosef and Rochel Levertov moved to the Lone Star state in 1984, its capital, Austin, had only a fledgling Jewish community. Twelve of the 20 semifinalists were members of the Hasidic Chabad-Lubavitch sect, and Chabad’s dominance among the results has made the competition a target for some critics.
