In this week’s edition of Letter and Spirit, we present a letter from the Rebbe written to President Ronald Reagan in 1982, thanking him for his good wishes on the occasion of the Rebbe’s birthday, along with a message of gratitude and encouragement to the president of the United States for his efforts in maintaining America’s greatness as a Super Power among the nations of the world. The letter was written in English through the Rebbe’s trusted secretary Rabbi Nissan Mindel, and was made available by the latter’s son-in-law, Rabbi Sholom Ber Shapiro.

After their somber visit to the Auschwitz concentration camp in Poland on Monday, some 800 Jewish students from Russia, accompanied by several Chabad Shluchim – including Russia’s chief rabbi Berel Lazar, continued on to Spain, where they visited historic Jewish sites from before the Jews were expelled from the country in 1492.

Teens Throw Brick at Jew; Flee on Subway Tracks
A brick, aimed at the head of a Jewish bus driver, thankfully missed its mark and instead struck the mirror and body of the bus, causing significant damage. The young teenagers who threw the brick fled into an adjacent subway station and onto the train tracks.

Kosher Pop-Up Fills Void in Bowery
On a recent Tuesday night at the Chabad House Bowery on the Lower East Side, a crowd began to form. Tables covered in craft paper filled the room, tea lights flickering in mason jars. At a long table at one end, servers set up paper plates and jugs of ice tea — but no food. “Jazzie’s running late,” explained Matt Glick, the Chabad House chief of staff.
2 Hamas Terror Tunnels Discovered
Following extensive military operations in near the Gaza border, Israeli Defense Forces have discovered two subterranean terror tunnels spanning from Gaza into Israel. Israel revealed today that the successful operations were based on information gleaned from a captured Hamas terrorist.
