Car Vandalized…

Sometime last (Wednesday) night on President St between New York Ave and Brooklyn Ave a car was vandalized. The side rear window was broken to gain entry to the car and there were numerous things stolen from the car including the airbags.

Police were called in the morning, but did not want to file a report till they were given an estimate on the damages. Shomrim were called and had to remind the cops on the scene, (who apparently were rookies), that they don’t need an estimate to file a report, and they filed the report.

Please take extra care not to leave anything in your car, and if you see anyone suspicious looking into cars don’t hesitate to call Shomrim at (718) 774-3333 24/7

The Weekly Sedra – Vayeira – A White Lie

Rabbi Yossi Kahanov Shliach to Jacksonville, FL

A woman once complained to me that when becoming more observant she had hoped that the struggle with the finer issues of right and wrong – with which she wrestled when she was not as religious – would be eliminated. She had anticipated that the principles and values of our religious belief system would eliminate the onus of having to discern and navigate the fine nuances and gray areas of morality and ethics, but, to her disappointment, it has only become more complicated.

Now that she had become more familiar with Torah and Jewish law, she was more sensitized to higher levels of morality, as well as many new Divine rights and wrongs. The more lines there are, the more fine lines there are. Fine lines leave room for doubt: “am I on the right side or the wrong side of the line?”

Brine Enthusiasts get in a Pickle — or Two

Jewish Journal

A couple of months ago, I was in a New York diner with my husband and in-laws when I had a minor epiphany.

We’d just placed our orders and the waiter had brought over our drinks, along with the requisite plate of pickles. My mother-in-law took one look at them and turned to my father-in-law. “Joe, are those goyishe pickles, or are they half-sours?” she asked. Acting as taste-tester, my father-in-law dutifully bit into a spear, and assured her it was kosher.

A Llama, a Trumpet, Inspiration and Lots of Other Words…

A Haftorah Thought – by Elazar Kohen

Once there was a llama. He had a trumpet. And he played his trumpet every day.

Oh, how he loved his trumpet. He was the happiest llama in the world.

But one day he got sick of his trumpet. So he broke it.

No more trumpet. No more happy llama…

(Based on a true story. Sort of.)

Inspiration: So amazing. So powerful. So transforming. So … fleeting.

We all experience it. And we all lose it.

New Project: Afternoon School For Tzeirei Hashluchim

Mushky, Yehudis and Yisroel Turk, of Cordoba, Argentina, studying at the Shluchim Office’s Online School.

Once there was no educational option for shluchim’s children other than home schooling. With today’s technological revolution, however, the Shluchim Office operates an online school for kids on shlichus the world over—and in time for the Kinus, the Shluchim Office is adding a new “Chassidishe afternoon school” just for young shluchim attending non-Chabad Jewish schools.

On the heels of its Online School’s tremendous success, the Shluchim Office is launching a new project: An afternoon school with curriculum specifically designed for shluchim’s children studying at their local Jewish school but not getting sufficient Chassidishe education.

New Jewish Community Center Opens Its Doors Serving Prospect Heights

Rabbi Ari & Chaya Kirschenbaum and their two children, Liba & Meir Avner are pleased to announce, that after only two short years of establishing a vital and pulsating Jewish presence in the Prospect Heights neighborhood, the heart of Brownstone Brooklyn, they will be opening their doors to a new JCC located at 214 Underhill Ave. (Bet Eastern Parkway/St Johns Pl) on the second floor.

The center will serve as the nerve axis for all that is Jewish, exciting, innovative and above all, all embracing. “Brooklyn is going through a Jewish renaissance period unlike one we have witnessed before” said Rabbi Ari “like our local real estate market, it’s been tough keeping up with the demand”.

Tanya Farin Davenen (Learning Tanya Before Praying)

Morristown, NJ — A week ago, new shluchim in Tomchei T’mimim of Morristown kicked off and new and incredible Mivtza called “Tanya Farin Davenen”. Bochurim were eagerly involved within a week with astonishing results. Over 90% of the Yeshiva are “koching” (involved with enthusiasm) in learning an entire Perek of Tanya before Davening everyday.

The Weekly Sedra – Vayeira

This week’s Torah portion opens as G-d appears to comfort Patriarch Abraham just three days after he circumcised himself at the age of 99.

But strangely, instead of being incapacitated by pain and discomfort as would be befitting a 99 year old freshly circumcised man, when he saw three guests approaching his tent Abraham actually ‘left G-d’ and ran to meet them!!

Although the Rabbis learn from this that it is more worthy to take in guests than to greet the presence of G-d it’s really not so clear what happened here!
