In my correspondence, I try not to pry as Malka is extremely private. After Tishrei last year, I was informed that a shliach and Rov in his community used her story in his drosha on Yom Kippur. When I informed her of this, she inquired, “What did he see so special about my story?”
As very devoted parents we would love to sacrifice ourselves for the sake of our children on the ‘altar’ of unconditional love. However, did we ever establish any goal plan and schedule of a structured program to follow, so we can maintain our relationships with them and keep a safe balance in achieving our target?
I am a businessman, an industrialist. And the story I have to tell here is how my family – despite the indisputable logic of the naysayers and despite our own finely-honed business sense – invested in a textile business in Israel, knowing it would be a losing proposition. We thought of it as a charitable donation, a short-term loss, because there was no way this business was going to survive long-term.

It is now almost three years that I began writing and posting a Weekly Story. None of them have triggered so many comments of thanks, curiosity as well as some skepticism as the chronicles of Malka, initially posted under the title “You Were Not Abandoned.”
What an awesome feeling and delighted pleasure it is for parents to be witness their child’s acknowledgment and enjoyment of their mother’s or father’s unique qualities. However, why is it sometimes so difficult to value and express esteem towards one’s nobility and kindness?
In 1990, when I was passing through New York – on my way home from Toronto where I was invited to speak at a women’s convention – I went to see the Rebbe as he was giving out dollars for charity. I stood in that very long line because there was someone who desperately needed the Rebbe’s blessing, and I wanted to use this occasion to ask for it. I was very nervous that when I reached the head of the line I would be so in awe of the Rebbe that I’d be rendered speechless, and I kept reciting Psalms to give myself courage.

I can add another point to that encounter with the Rebbe [which happened in the early 70’s]: The Rebbe was strongly against me developing ANY friendship with non-Jews. He pointed out how far Chazal went to discourage friendships between Jews and non-Jews, even of same gender, by forbidding their wine and other prohibitions (maybe he specified: cooking, bread, oil, cheese – but I don’t remember).

Launched during this time of Bein HaMeitzarim, during which the Rebbe urged us to study and strengthen our efforts to merit the Geulah and the building of the third Beis Hamikdash.
We all wish we should have fulfilled our full potential in the task of raising our children. We may have sometimes been careless, overwhelmed and couldn’t keep our self-control or personal balance.
