New Project Aids Schoolchildren in Moscow

MOSCOW, Russia – Considering the fact that only two weeks remain until the new school year begins in schools across the Former Soviet Union, a new project has commenced aimed at helping youngsters to get ready for this event. While some families will be sending their child to school for the first time, others may simply need assistance in preparing for September 1st due to reasons of financial incapacity.

Sen. Lieberman: “My love for the Shluchim just keeps growing”

STAMFORD, CT [CHI] — Senator Joe Lieberman (I-CT) recently purchased a new home in Stamford Connecticut today and will G-d willing be moving in shortly from his home in New Haven.

Immediately following the closing on he asked Rabbi Yisrael Deren, Shliach in Stamford, and his wife Shifra Aviva to come help affix Mezuzahs on the doors in the home as well as to show him and his wife what needed to be done to kosher the kitchen.

Summer Studies for Belarus’ Jewish Youth

BREST, Belarus — One year since the ‘STARS’ program was introduced by the Jewish community of Brest, its educational activities did not cease during the summer. Rabbi Chaim Rabinovich, a Chabad Lubavitch emissary and the primary instructor for this course, has been busily guiding students involved in this initiative, offering instruction and answering their many questions.

“It is with great pleasure that youth are coming to the Synagogue, where the classes take place,” explained Efim Basin, Assistant to Rabbi Rabinovich. “Here, these young adults have exhibited remarkable interest in studying Judaica, Jewish philosophy, traditions and culture.”

Kharkov, Ukraine –- My introduction to Ukraine began in the check-in line at John F. Kennedy Airport in New York. Despite torrential rains, our flight was scheduled to leave on time, according to a Ukrainian man standing behind me who spoke in a heavily accented English. Nervous to be flying on the Ukrainian national airline, I turned to him for assurance that AeroSvit would get me there in one piece. Unfortunately, he had none to offer – he hadn’t been back to his birthplace in the 14 years since he immigrated to the US. Instead assurance came via a young haredi, who seemed ready to vouch for the airline.

He was one of many haredim to board my plane, a strange counterpart to the high-heeled, flashy Ukrainians – mothers and daughters alike – with bare midriffs and summer bronzed skin.

New Shluchim to Stavropol, Russia

Rabbi Zvi and Mrs Chayale (nee Greenberg) Hershcovich of Montreal, Canada will IYH be going on Shlichus to Stavropol, Russia, after Tishrei, where they will establish a new Chabad House serving the needs of the local Jewish Community.

The new Shluchim were appointed by Rabbi Lazar.

It’s a Toy-ous Time at Yale Kids Hospital

So when Hodakov delivered some 100 toys Monday to Yale-New Haven’s Children’s Hospital, it really came from the heart.

Chabad of UW Acquires a New Home

Seattle, WA — Chabad of Washington University, directed by Rabbi Elie and Mrs Chaya Rochel Estrin, closed a deal on a home in Seattle’s University District. The property is located at 5200 21st Ave NE. They acquired this 5000 square foot property for $870,000 with the generous help of Mr. George Rohr and his family foundation.

A New Mitzvah in the Kitchen – Chabad Opens Community Dish Mikveh

Natick, MA — For Metrowest residents, dish-washing is becoming a more spiritual experience.“The Dish Mikvah,” which opened last month, is the most recent installation of the Mei Menachem Western Well’s community mikveh, a state-of-the-art Natick facility aimed to serve roughly 40,000 Jewish individuals living west of Boston. Rabbi Levi Fogelman and his wife, Chanie, the leadership at the Chabad Center of Natick, spearheaded the initiative with the intent to revitalize the “mitzvah of the mikveh,” as well as to address the importance of making dishes and other utensils kosher for household use.

Camp Gan Israel Celebrates a Decade of Summer Fun

Greenwich, CT — This summer marks the 10th year anniversary of Camp Gan Israel of Greenwich, most recently located on Lake Avenue. Founded by Yoseph and Maryashi Deren in 1997, the camp seeks to provide a quality camp experience within a Jewish environment for children 20 months to 13 years old. The camp shares a name with 1,500 national Camp Gans and is one of 3,500 Chabad organizations worldwide.
