Chabad Welcoming a New Torah Scroll

CINCINNATI, OH — The Chabad Jewish Center will welcome sacred Sefer Torah, or Torah scroll, on Sunday, Sept. 10, with a gala completion ceremony and live festivities.

A Torah scroll, the most sacred ritual item in the Jewish religion, consists of several dozen parchment sheets hand-inscribed with the revered words of the Torah, or the Five Books of Moses that form the first part of the Bible. Consisting of more than 304,000 individually inked Hebrew letters, a typical scroll takes a highly trained scribe more than a year to write.

The Torah to be dedicated in September, dubbed “the Community Torah,” is a communal project dedicated to memory of Luc Bramy, a beloved community member who passed away last year.

The completion of a new Torah scroll has traditionally been a great community celebration.

At 6:15 p.m. Monday, Sept. 10, the new Torah scroll will be formally completed at an exciting event at the Chabad Jewish Center, at 3977 Hunt Road. Participants will help expert scribe Rabbi David Cohen, flying in from Montreal, Canada for the occasion, complete the final letters. The program will also include a special exhibit and hands-on children’s activities on the writing and manufacturing of Torahs, Tefillin and Mezuzos.

A full-course dinner will be served following the completion. It is free.
