State Police Announce Two-Week ‘Buckle Up’ Campaign

The New York State Police and other law enforcement agencies across the state have launched their annual “buckle up” campaign, in which drivers and passengers who aren’t wearing seatbelts will be ticketed.

NYPD Deploys Gunshot Detectors Around Brooklyn

Last year, the NYPD started using ShotSpotter, a technology that helps police automatically detect the sound of gunshots, and pinpoint where they came from in real time. Over the past year, the police department has deployed hundreds of tiny sensors on rooftops and light posts in several gun violence-prone precincts in Brooklyn and The Bronx.

Chickenpox Outbreak in Williamsburg May Spread

The New York City Health Department is investigating an outbreak of varicella (chickenpox) in the Orthodox Jewish community of Williamsburg, Brooklyn. To date, there have been 75 reports of persons with varicella who became ill during or after March 2016. The median age of patients is 3 years (range 0 to 10 years); 72% were not vaccinated against varicella, and 14% had not yet received the recommended number of doses.

Fight to Stop NYC Bag Tax Goes to Albany

New York State Senator Simcha Felder and Assemblyman Michael Cusick are seeking to overturn the NY City Council’s recent passage of a plastic bag tax. Felder, Cusick and many of their colleagues held a press conference today asking New Yorkers to sign an on-line petition and encourage their elected officials in Albany to support the Felder-Cusick’s bill (S.7336) to protect New Yorkers from taxes or fees on the use of carryout bags.

Brooklyn Residents Object to Mandatory Trees

Former Mayor Michael Bloomberg may have had ambitious goals when he announced his intention to plant one million trees in New York City by the year 2017, but some Brooklyn residents are objecting to the forced beautification of their streets according to a local elected official.
