The ‘Pan Kloli’ is read at the Ohel

QUEENS, NY [CHI] — 12:00pm and thousands are lined up waiting their turn to enter the Ohel on this auspicious day of Gimmel Tammuz. Suddenly there is a halt, the movement is suspended for a short while to make room for members of Agudas Chasidei Chabad headed by Rabbi Avrohom Shemtov to enter and read the General Pan.

Rabbi Shemtov reads the Pan in an emotional tone that is heard by everyone at the Ohel via the loudspeakers. A hush silence prevails as everyone stops what they’re doing and chatting to listen to the reading of the Pan.

Chabad of Nova, an outreach center now operating in Davie, filed the lawsuit in May, saying city zoning laws forced the congregation out of the city by unfairly limiting where the center could operate. Until October 2006, houses of worship were generally limited to the agriculturally zoned areas in western Cooper City. And they are still banned from most shopping districts and from most residential neighborhoods.
