One Year to the 10 Alarm Greenpoint Arson

By Jotham Sederstorm – New York Daily News

Still-unsolved May 2006 arson that razed 6 blocks a sore point for nabe

A year after the city’s largest inferno in a decade engulfed 15 buildings along the Brooklyn waterfront, the historic site of the Greenpoint Terminal Market remains a charred wasteland and a sore spot for locals.

Nobody has been convicted in the arson fire that broke out on May 2, 2006, and eventually took 6 million gallons of water to extinguish. And nothing has been developed on the scorched earth where the warehouses once stood.

The Weekly Sedra – Parshas Emor

The Rebbe says:

1. In this week’s Torah portion Hashem commands the Jewish people to count the 49 days from the 2nd day of Passover till the giving of the Torah (Shavous): “You shall count for yourselves from the day after the day of rest (2nd day of Pesach), from the day which you will bring the Omer wave-offering (2nd day of Pesach), seven complete weeks they shall be (49 days). Until the day after the seven weeks (Shavous) you shall count 50 days and you shall bring a meal offering to Hashem” (see Leviticus, Chapter 23, Verses 15 and 16).

2. The Rebbe now begins discussing “the counting of the Omer”:

The Law is that if one forgot to count one of the 49 days between Passover and Shavous (the giving of the Torah) he continues counting the other days but without a Blessing.

Commission Votes Against Expansion Chabad

Democrat Tallahassee
Rabbi Oirechman

Tallahassee, FL — Siding with concerned neighbors over religious rights, the Tallahassee/Leon County Planning Commission voted Tuesday against a proposal to rezone a 2.1-acre lot at Meridian and Plantation roads owned by the Orthodox Jewish congregation Chabad Lubavitch.

After hearing from a dozen or so residents of the Plantation Road neighborhood during a two-hour public hearing, the commission rejected staff’s advice to recommend the rezoning, which would let the Chabad expand to 15,000 feet. The synagogue needs the rezoning, which now goes before the City Commission, in order to add non-religious uses such as a day care.

Making Our Divine Sparks Shine in College

Michael D. Wain – Chabad.edu

Charlottesville, VA — Last week’s Torah portion states: “When you shall come into the land, and shall have planted all manner of trees for food. … For three years it shall be ‘orlah’ unto you: it shall not be eaten. On the fourth year, all its fruit shall be holy for praise-giving to G-d. And in the fifth year shall you eat of its fruit, that it may yield to you its increase.”

I find it interesting how the verse breaks up these periods: For the first three years, it is forbidden to partake of any fruit. Only in the fourth year is the fruit made holy, and finally in the fifth year the fruit is ready for consumption. In a way, this description patterns our undergraduate college experience, or at least my experience at the University of Virginia.

Crown Heights, Brooklyn – With this years Lag BaOmer Parade just days away, parade organizers were forced to deal with an issue regarding the permits for the parade.
