PARKING ADVISORY: Road Work In Crown Heights

For all those of you that prefer driving over walking, you may have noticed that Union St. between Kingston Ave. and Troy Ave. is blocked off, this is do to road work.

The city decided to scrape off the top layer of the road and repave it, so do take this into consideration and preplan your “trip”.

And starting tomorrow (Friday) they will be repaving the rest of Union St. between Nostrand Ave. and Kingston Ave.

You will not be aloud to park on these streets so find a parking place well in advance of Shabbos, because it will be very hard to find a place.

On his return from a European conference on intolerance, Gov. George Pataki last week called on Jewish leaders to keep him involved in their efforts to combat anti-Semitism.

“It’s too important to the future of our country and the world to just say we had a successful conference and it’s over and now we can go back to our lives,” said Pataki, a Republican who was asked by Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to lead the U.S. delegation to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe’s conference on anti-Semitism and other forms of intolerance in Cordoba, Spain.

Economists Gather at Waldorf Astoria in Support of Chabad

COL

Affluent Businessmen and economists, Jews and non Jews of Manhattan’s high society, participated in a salutation evening for Chabad in the center of Manhattan. The shliach, Rabbi Yehoshua Metsger and his wife held their annual dinner in the prestigious Waldorf Astoria hotel.

The central address was delivered by Rabbi Moshe Kotlarsky of Merkoz L’inyonei Chinuch, the organization responsible for sending shluchim all over the world. Rabbi Kotlarsky told the crowd about the great achievements of the Shlichus project, which is an unprecedented phenomenon in the entire Jewish history. Rabbi Berel Lazaar, chief Rabbi of Russia, another speaker at this event, spoke about the revival of the Jewish communities in Russia, where the Jewish spark had been kept intact by the ‘mesirus nefesh’ of Chabadniks who bravely spread yiddishkeit despite the oppression of the Soviet regime. The world famous singer, Reb Mordechai Ben Dovid entertained the crowd with inspiring songs accompanied by a band and orchestra.

Construction in full swing on new Shul & Mikva in Crown Heights

Shmais

After a long period of quiet and problems obtaining the necessary permits, construction of a new Shul & Mivka is now in full swing.

The new Shul, to carry the name of Rabbi Lazer Levy OBM & Mikva that will carry the name of R’ Meir Rabkin OBM is being built on the exact location on Kingston Avenue between Crown & Montgomery where the old Skvere Shul & Mikva was located.

According to sources knowledgeable with the building plans, when completed, the Mikva with 2 sets of stairways and large enough to accommodate 15 people at one time, will be the most modern and up to date in Crown Heights. In addition there will be 16 showers and a very spacious dressing room.

OK Kashrus is sponsoring the Shul while the Rabkin family is sponsoring the Mikva.

Crown Heights resident Yanky Sufrin’s YHS Construction Corporation whose successful projects include the beautiful Bais Binyomin on Montgomery Street, the gorgeous Mei Menachem Mikva in Brooklyn Heights and the brand new condos on Brooklyn Ave., is handling the project.

Shmais

SNS has learned that this coming Shabbos Parshas Shlach, for the first time ever as a joint effort, 25 Shuls in the Crown Heights community will host a Shiur in the Rebbe’s Sichos in preparation for Gimmel Tamuz.

These Shiurim were arranged by a group of devoted Kolel members inspired to bring about a deeper level of Hiskashrus in an atmosphere of unity throughout the community for the weeks leading up to Gimmel Tamuz.

All community members are invited to attend the Shiur in their respective shuls. The Shiurim are to take place (in most Shuls) between Mincha and Marriv Shabbos afternoon.

Word has it that this is only the first of several programs for the CH community. May the preparations alone suffice to hasten the long awaited Geulah Shleima, now!

Yankel’s Brother: It’s Not Over

Jewish Week
Norman Rosenbaum, Yankel’s Brother

Hospital settlement won’t end Norman Rosenbaum’s quest for justice in ’91 Crown Heights slaying.

Nearly 14 years after the death of Yankel Rosenbaum at the outset of the Crown Heights riots, his brother says he will continue fighting for action, even after a settlement last week over faulty medical treatment at Kings County Hospital seemed to signal the final chapter in the saga.

“This does not close the book,” Norman Rosenbaum, an Australian lawyer, said Monday. “We are exploring what options exist.”

Those options, he said, might include legal recourse against the doctors who cared for his brother.
