Tuesday marked the first real day of the Republican National Convention, as well as my first real day performing my page duties, and I am happy to write that the day was just as exciting as I had hoped.

Two months ago, Miriam Leichtling’s parents lost their jobs within a week of each other. For several months, Leichtling, a New York designer who has led several organized trips to Israel, had been agonizing over how to scrape together enough money to send her parents, ages 66 and 71, to Israel. But the cost of airfare for three – normally starting at about $1,000 per ticket, with a layover — was prohibitive.

Co-op Members Vote on Boycott of Israeli Products [Update: Boycott Proposal Defeated]

Members of the park slope co-op are currently debating whether to vote on a measure that, if approved, will ban all Israeli products from the progressive – ‘consumer owned’ – outlet. More than 2,000 members showed up at Brooklyn Tech High School in Fort Greene for a memorable meeting that could last hours. You can follow a live Twitter feed of the meeting here.

Update: Boycott proposal rejected, to the tune of 1,000 against to 600 in favor.

Bomb Scare at 770 [Update: Package Harmless]

Crown Heights [CHI] — The entire 770 has been evacuated and all the morning regulars are congregating outside due to a suspicious package that has been mysteriously placed at the “Shalash” entrance (between old and new 770 buildings). The NYPD’s bomb squad is on the way to inspect the package and determine what further steps must be taken. Update: Package determined to be harmless.

BREAKING: Hostage Situation at 840 Mongomery St., Corner of Troy. UPDATE: Suspect Apprehended

Crown Heights [CHI] — Reports are flooding in about an ongoing hostage situation on the corner of Montgomery St. and Troy Ave., where a stabbing occured. It appears the suspect fled into the corner building – 840 Montgomery – and holed himself up in one of the apartments.
