Every night, multitudes of Crown Heights residents, plus thousands of guests here for Yom Tov, rejoice in unity with true ahavas Yisroel. On chol hamoed, thousands from other neighbourhoods join us in the simchas yom tov, which has become renowned throughout the New York area, making it a huge kiddush Hashem. The Rebbe often told us that on Sukos we draw from Above abundant blessings of simcha for ourselves, our families and the whole Jewish people all year.

The incident took place Motzai Shabbos at around 10:00pm on Carroll and Schenectady in front a building where the woman lived and the man was trying to gain access.

Woman Mugged in Broad Daylight on Montgomery

CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn [CHI] — Earlier this week a woman was mugged in broad daylight on a Crown Heights street. The incident took place at around 12:45pm Tuesday on Montgomery St, between Kingston Ave and Albany Ave, where a black man described to be around 30 years old hit a lady knocking her to the ground and stealing her purse.

“People have come to our services, and mentioned that they couldn't get into other places for the ticket offices were closed, and then they saw our video ad and said I'm definitely coming here.” Said Rabbi Yosef Konikov from Chabad of South Orlando. “Actually a few people told us that,” he adds.

Yom Kippur always gets the better of me. As angelic children, we were taught that on the Holy Day, we resemble angels. Praying for haven from the accuser, we reflect heavenly beings. There is no consumption of food. The penitent is consumed by the awesomeness of the day, not merely as a form of abstention, but because angels do not eat. Physical indulgence is prohibited. Instead, we indulge in divine practice.

I recall one Passover, as beams of light were passing overhead, my childhood imagination convinced me that I was witnessing angels escorting the prophet Elijah through the portals of heaven. In high school as I assisted an elderly woman once, she called me an angel. As a driver I often listen to people's accounts of the paranormal on coast-to-coast AM, broadcast from the City of Angels. As a Rabbi I am often asked about the Jewish perspective on angels. And as Jews, we know that our prayers are projected to G-d by angels. In fact the Talmud suggests that when seeking a mentor, one that resembles an “angel of the lord of hosts” should be chosen.

This event took place the day before Yom Kippur, bringing great joy to Jews residing in this predominantly Muslim city.

That day in the Synagogue, this festive gathering brought together more than a hundred people eager to share in the joy of this historic event. The initial speech was made by Chief Rabbi of Kazan Yitzhak Gorelik, after which the floor was given to Alexander Kantor, whose family co-sponsored the writing of this particular Torah scroll. In accordance with Jewish tradition, members of the Kantor family wrote the last few letters of the scroll.
