I Don’t Fly on Shabbos

Walter Sobchak described his Sabbath observance in the Coen brothers’ classic The Big Lebowski by saying, “I don’t roll on Shabbos.” I’m not much of a bowler, but I don’t roll on Shabbos, either, and neither do I fly. This became a problem on Friday afternoon when trying to return home from meetings in Boston for Shabbat with my family. The captain announced over the loudspeaker: “Ladies and gentlemen, there are funnel clouds in D.C. The airports will not open until 9 p.m.”

I learned about Contempt of Court in Elementary School. The teacher spoke about automobile drivers obeying stop signs. Why should they? “Why should we obey any signs?” she asked. Our young minds grappled with the question but couldn’t come up with an answer that our teacher could not refute. “So what if you got caught,” she argued, “could we really go to jail for not obeying a sign – how silly!”

An Ambitious Expansion Project in West Boca

With a target completion date of March 2013, Chabad-Lubavitch of West Boca Raton’s new home will encompass 12,000 square feet of space on an acre and a half campus in Palm Beach County.

Rabbi Zalman Bukiet’s usually enthusiastic voice was even more filled with pride and excitement as he described his hopes for his South Florida congregation’s ambitious expansion plans. Having recently purchased $900,000 worth of land, Chabad-Lubavitch of West Boca Raton is setting out to build a permanent home in Palm Beach County.
