Mudslide Claims Jewish Lives in Western Canada

On Thursday, July 12th, rocks, mud and trees crashed down a mountain above the shores of Kootenay Lake in British Columbia, ripping through Johnsons Landing. It was followed by another slide on Friday. At least three houses were engulfed when the wall of mud, rock and trees cascaded down the hillside.

Gathered in Danbury Connecticut, over 150 Mechanchim are taking part in a two day conference aimed at sharpening their teaching skills as well as presenting and discussing new ideas. The conference is organized by the Chinuch Office which is directed by Rabbi Nochum Kaplan.

About a year ago Marianne Grin, a Jewish woman from Florence, Italy, fled to Russia with her three children to escape a ruling by an Italian court giving full custody of the children to her estranged non-Jewish husband. The husband had successfully portrayed her as ‘mentally unstable’ to the Italian judge, citing the fact that she enrolled her children in a Gan Israel summer camp run by Chabad – which he argued was a ‘radical religious cult.’
