Kosher Food Companies to Maintain Prices for Pesach

In response to a letter sent earlier this month to the CEOs of leading kosher food companies, Assemblyman Dov Hikind (D-Brooklyn) today announced that four major distributors have agreed to reduce or maintain prices for their Pesach items this year.

Pedestrian Struck Outside Oholei Torah

CROWN HEIGHTS [CHI] — At around 9:30 this morning, Tuesday, a woman crossing the street was struck by a SUV. The incident happened in front of Oholei Torah, on the Eastern Pkwy service lane, between Brooklyn and New York Ave. A women was driving a SUV in the service lane, when another women suddenly appeared between two parked school busses.

Library and Media Center to Open in Wake of Sudden Loss

WOODMERE, NY — Fighting against the anguish that has struck their family and community, Rabbi Zalman and Chanie Wolowik, the co-directors of Chabad-Lubavitch of the Five Towns in Nassau County, N.Y., announced the building of a children’s library in memory of their son, Levi Yitzchak Wolowik. The nine-year-old boy suddenly passed away in the middle of the night last month.

The Levi Yitzchak Jewish Children’s Library is slated to open in late spring.

Chabad of West Orange Welcomes New Torah

HUNTINGTON BEACH, CA [CHI] — Over 200 people celebrated the completion of a new Sefer Torah at Chabad of West Orange County; on Sunday, the 12th of Adar. The Torah was written in Eretz Yisroel and donated in loving memory of Tziporah bas Chaim Yosef whose Yahrzeit was on Vov Adar.

Rabbi Asks Pope Not to Wear Cross at Kottel

JERUSALEM — Ahead of Pope Benedict XVI’s May visit to Israel, the rabbi of the Western Wall, Shmuel Rabinovitch, has said that it is not proper to come to the site wearing a cross.

The pope wears a cross in all public appearances and is slated to visit the Western Wall on May 12 after a meeting with Muslim religious leaders at the Dome of the Rock.

NEW YORK [AP] — Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s change to city term-limits law won approval from the federal government Tuesday, clearing the final hurdle for the billionaire to run for a third term this year.

Under the Voting Rights Act, the Justice Department must approve modifications to voting rules in New York City as a way to prevent those changes from discriminating against voters.

Financial Crisis Slams Russia’s Jewish Billionaires

MOSCOW [JTA] — Russia’s Jewish billionaires lost more than two-thirds of their wealth in 2008, according to figures released by Forbes magazine.

At the same time, wealthy Jewish philanthropists with ties to the former Soviet Union also saw their fortunes drastically reduced in the latest sign that it will be difficult for the Russian-speaking Jewish community to depend on the largesse of local donors.

ISRAEL — Zion Badash, 18, from Savyon, has invented a device to reduce emissions from internal combustion engines in most vehicles by as much as 40 percent and significantly cut gasoline consumption.

The compact contraption called Z5 has no moving parts and can be easily self-installed in cars.

Third Suspect Found Guilty in Timoshenko Murder

NEW YORK [WABC] — A jury has convicted Lee Woods, the third suspect on trial for the murder of New York City police officer Russel Timoshenko.

Woods was convicted on charges of aggravated murder, aggravated attempted murder, and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon.
