CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn [CHI] — A Jewish resident was shot earlier this evening with a BB gun as he was opening the door to his home on Montgomery Street. The incident took place at around 5:30pm between Troy and Schenectady Avenues.

Two of Mayor Bloomberg’s crucial voting bases got some transit-related relief this month, just as his controversial campaign for a third term heats up.

The city agreed to change the headache-causing alternate-side parking rules for Riverdale residents, cutting the number of street-sweeping days in half. And Staten Island express-bus riders found out that a possible $2.50 fare hike will be, at most, $1.25, compliments of the mayor.

Both Riverdale and Staten Island heavily favored Bloomberg in his contentious 2005 race against Fernando Ferrer.

ISRAEL [AP] — The Israeli military has launched its own channel on video-sharing website YouTube, posting footage of air strikes and other attacks on Hamas militants in the Gaza Strip.

The spokesman’s office of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said it created the channel — youtube.com/user/idfnadesk — on Monday to “help us bring our message to the world.”

Chabad Centers in Beer Sheva, Ashkelon Double as Bomb Shelters As Children, Adults Wait Out the War

Kehot Builds Festive White Tent for Hei Teves Sale

CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn [CHI] — Kehot Publication Society built a huge white tent next to the recently renovated showroom on Eastern Parkway at the corner of Kingston Avenue for the Annual Hei Teves Sale. The temporary edifice features a heating system and can be accessed through the store. The tent will conveniently house four cash register lines to accommodate the large number of customers, newly barcoded books which will cut down on waiting in line, reprints of books that were long out-of-print, many new titles, and a larger selection of books than previous years. Westchester Government Hosts Chabad Lubavitch

WESTCHESTER, NY [CHI] — On the second day of Chanukah, Westchester County Executive Mr. Andrew Spano, hosted a Chabad Lubavitch Menorah lighting ceremony in his executive chamber.

The ceremony took place the morning after the County Executive lit Westchester’s largest Menorah at the Jewish Community Center in Scarsdale NY. The 29 foot tall gold colored Rambam Menorah is the tallest of the 26 Chabad public Menorahs throughout Westchester county.

Alternate Side Parking Suspended Thursday

Alternate side parking (street cleaning) regulations are suspended on Thursday, January 1 for the observance of New Year’s Day. Because New Year’s Day is a major legal holiday, parking meter regulations are also suspended. On major legal holidays, stopping, standing, and parking are permitted, except in areas where stopping, standing, and parking rules are in effect 7 days a week (for example, “No Standing Anytime”).

The Friday after New Year’s, January 2, is not a holiday, and alternate side parking regulations, parking meter rules, and all other parking regulations will be in effect.

Chabad Committee Formed to help Rubashkin Defense

NEW YORK, NY [JTA] — Chabad members formed a committee to support the legal defense of former Agriprocessors manager Sholom Rubashkin.

Rubashkin, who managed the now-shuttered kosher meat plant in Postville, Iowa, was arrested in late October on charges that he helped illegal immigrants secure fraudulent documentation that permitted them to be employed at Agriprocessors. While free on bond he was arrested a second time on bank fraud charges. Rubashkin is now being held in custody following a judge’s determination that he poses a flight risk.

iVolunteer and Louis Vuitton Distribute Chanukah Gift to Darchei Menachem

BROOKLYN, NY [CHI] — For the first time since the inception of gift giving to children’s schools during holiday time, Jewish children received gifts in honor of Chanuka this year. Because of a devoted volunteer at iVolunteer who is also an employee at Louis Vuitton, Darchei Menachem of Crown Heights benefited from a most unusual gift giving program. The children wrote a wish list of what they wanted and they wishes were happily fulfilled last week when a shipment of beautifully wrapped presents arrived at the school door.

Thousands Come to see Maccabees in Florida

DELRAY BEACH, FL [CHI] — Maccabees, a live interactive Chanukah adventure, presented by Rabbi Shmuly Gutnick the director of Chabad Youth Network of Florida. Thousands of Children from all over Florida; Palm Beach, Broward and Miami –Dade came to see this amazing production, in which they went back in time to relive the miracle of Chanukah. All left in awe and had the most rocking time ever!

SAN ANTONIO, TX — Jason Wright dances on the top step of the Arneson River Theatre, carrying his 6-year-old son on his shoulders. Below him a sea of heads bob to the beat of music being pumped out from the stage.

The scene, in many ways, is not unusual for the River Walk. Only this time, many of the heads sport yarmulkes and the vocals accompanying the high-energy music is being belted out in Yiddish.

Yeshivah at The Ohel Lit Up LI & Queens

Once again, The Yeshiva by The Ohel HaKadosh organized Mivtza Chanukah with a “bang”, this time with uniquely-designed “Chanukah Mitzva Tanks”, helping many Shluchim in Long Island and Queens with their Chanukah celebrations and Menorah lightings.
