On the 12th of Tammuz in 1927, the sixth Rebbe of Chabad, Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Schneerson, was released from soviet imprisonment after being arrested for his activities in spreading Judaism across the USSR.
Around thirty years ago, I was in a bungalow colony with my father a”h , and during a farbrengen around Yud Beis Tammuz one of the men asked, “Reb Meir, you lived in Russia, you were imprisoned because you were a chassidishe Lubavitcher Jew. You lived through the arrest of the Frierdiker Rebbe and his liberation on Yud Beis – Yud Gimmel Tammuz, so to you Yud Beis Tammuz is relevant. But what mesiras nefesh does an American born Jew like me have? What does Yud Beis Tammuz mean to us?” Thus began a farbrengen, a younger chossid turning to an elder chossid for guidance and inspiration.

Recently I read an article about wearing a “shabbos belt”, and that propelled me to post the following thoughts which I had written years ago. As this Wednesday night/Thursday day is Gimmel Tammuz, I figured I will post a story of the Rebbe, that will inspire us, and we will come to the realization, that a faithful shepherd, does not forsake his flock. After all, by every farbrengen beginning this Shabbos, stories of the Rebbe will be said and listened to. Indeed I began working on finding out the details of just such a story, which would have been called “A Dollar for the Taxi-driver.”
