The Fast of the 10th of Tevet

Chabad.org

The Fast begins at 5:52am and ends at 5:27pm

On the 10th of Tevet of the year 3336 from Creation (425 BCE), the armies of the Babylonian emperor Nebuchadnezzar laid siege to Jerusalem. Thirty months later — on the 9th of Tammuz, 3338 — the city walls were breached, and on the 9th of Av that year, the Holy Temple was destroyed. The Jewish people were exiled to Babylonia for 70 years.

Tevet 10 is observed as a day of fasting, mourning and repentance. We refrain from food and drink from daybreak through nightfall, and add the Selichot and other special supplements to our prayers. (More recently, Tevet 10 was chosen to also serve as a “general kaddish day” for the victims of the Holocaust, many of whose day of martyrdom is unknown.)

Tonight is Nittel Nacht

The Rebbe and the previous Rebbe playing a game of chess.

Just a reminder that tonight is “Nittel Nacht” and the custom is that we don’t learn as to not be “adding Chayus”.

The Rebbe says in a Sicha that we shouldn’t “waste our time” but involve ourselves in something like chess which exercises the mind or any other chore that needs to be done. And the Rebbe related a story in the Sicha where a Bochur would save all the sewing of the buttons on his cloths to “Nittel Nacht” to be productive in a “non Adding Chayus” way.

So good luck in those chess games!

Comments are a privilege!

As you all may have noticed recently, a lot of comments have been denied and deleted, the reason being that it was getting way “out of hand”. CrownHeights.info has adopted a policy which was very liberal with the comments and it came back to bite us.

Most comments that have been submitted had nothing to do with the article, and worse, some comments have been entirely negative to other commentators. This will no longer stand.

From now on, if you would like to see your comments posted, please make sure they have mostly what to do with the article, and keep the negativity down to nil, it will not be tolerated any more.
