Starting Monday, New York City Transit's new rules of conduct will make it illegal to place your feet on the seat of a bus or train or to jump a turnstile if your MetroCard is not working.

The new rules, approved by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority in September, also make it illegal to walk between subway cars, wear in-line skates, ride a skateboard or straddle a bicycle in the transit system.

New subway rules

Starting Monday, New York City Transit’s new rules of conduct will make it illegal to place your feet on the seat of a bus or train or to jump a turnstile if your MetroCard is not working.

The new rules, approved by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority in September, also make it illegal to walk between subway cars, wear in-line skates, ride a skateboard or straddle a bicycle in the transit system.

Current rules of conduct make it a violation to drink alcoholic beverages, panhandle, smoke or carry a liquid in an open container.

Violating any of the rules can result in a fine, arrest or ejection from the system.

Brochures explaining the changes will be available on buses and in subway stations. The rules also are listed on www.mta.info. On the Web site, look in the New York City Transit category for “Rules of Conduct.”

in is not only illegal to "Place one’s foot on the seat of a subway, bus, or platform bench" it is also illegal to: "occupy more than one seat or place bags on an empty seat when doing so would interfere with… the comfort of other customers".

"with… the comfort of other customers"

they even give out tickets for people who have their bags on other seats while the rest of the train car is empty.

the new law states specifically that only when the train is full you can get a ticket for occupieng more than 1 seat.
if you travel late at night and the trains are empty you can "safely" spread yourself out on 2 3 4 or even 5 seats

it is also against the law to sleep on the subway.

you mention walking between cars as a new law, doe that mean you cant anymore walk over to the next car if theres no seats?!
