Rabbi Israel Meir Lau Delivers First Annual Gershon Jacobson Lecture

by Shlomo Abraham
R. Israel Meir Lau, Ashkenazi Chief
Rabbi of Israel.

Former Chief Rabbi of Israel Rabbi Israel Meir Lau spoke Tuesday evening at New York’s NYU on the topic of The Jewish Future. The lecture was a tribute to legendary journalist Gershon Jacobson who passed away just over one year ago.

Jacobson’s eldest son Simon, a noted author and speaker in his own right, opened the event with remarks on his father’s life accomplishments as journalist and editor of the Yiddish weekly Algemeiner Journal. Simon then invited Cantor Joseph Malovany of the 5th Ave. Synagogue to perform a cantorial tribute to his father.

Before introducing the main speaker, Simon summed up the resolutions made by his extended family; namely a five part plan to actualize his father’s goal of assuring Jewish continuity. The efforts include the Gershon Jacobson Jewish Continuity Fund, the expansion of the Algemeiner Journal, the launch of Algemeiner.com, the digitizing of the Algemeiner archives and the annual Gershon Jacobson Lecture.

Fumes from a waterproofing spray ignited and set off an explosion in the basement of a Brooklyn home yesterday morning, killing a 27-year-old workman and severely burning two others, one of whom staggered out into the backyard in flames.

The blast ripped through the kitchen floor of the three-story home on East 31st Street in Flatlands just seconds after a resident, Tzipora Friedman, walked out of the kitchen into the living room to look at fabric samples with a decorator who had come to the house, according to a cousin who spoke to Ms. Friedman yesterday. Her husband, Joseph Friedman, and their six children were not home.

Fire Department officials said that the man who was killed, Antonio Tapia of Burlington, N.J., and the other two workers were in the basement building a mikvah, or small pool, to be used for ritual baths that Orthodox Jewish women take before their wedding and after giving birth…

Interest in kabbalah high in Marin

mysticism. Photo: Robert Tong

Marin, CA – Jewish mysticism – so complex it is rarely shared by Judaism’s uninitiated – is “alive and well in Marin,” according to Rabbi Yisrael Rice of Chabad House, a Hassidic congregation in Marinwood.

Rice regularly teaches kabbalah one-on-one and in workshops in the county and across the country. Interest in the ancient tradition of interpreting the Hebrew Bible symbolically instead of literally took off eight years ago when Madonna and other celebrities began singing its praises.

Rice’s students are mostly “kabbalistic wannabes,” he says: people who seek the enlightenment of Jewish mysticism and the ability to practice it in their lives.

And enlightenment and personal awareness are attractive to many who call Marin home.

The four hands moved together in unison, pushing the quill across the blank parchment, writing the Hebrew word bereshit.

The word, which means ”in the beginning,” was the first of tens of thousands to be inscribed in the Torah scroll in memory of 16-year-old Daniel Wultz.

His parents, Tuly and Sheryl Wultz, and his sister Amanda were the first to write in the scroll, which contains the first five books of the Hebrew Bible.

Daniel was in Israel with his parents, celebrating Passover and visiting his grandparents, when a 21-year-old suicide bomber detonated 30 pounds of explosives at the entrance of a Tel Aviv restaurant where Daniel was eating.

“It looks special,” said Popack, who got to see the hand-lettered scroll completed up-close at the congregation’s Torah celebration Sunday at the SeaPort Marina Hotel on Pacific Coast Highway.

Dobbs Ferry synagogue celebrates new Torah

The Journal News

Dobbs Ferry, NY – Jewish tradition holds that God revealed his teachings to Moses at Mount Sinai more than 3,000 years ago.

Recorded in the Torah, these teachings are central to Judaism and have been revered throughout the ages.

The reproduction of a Torah scroll, therefore, is a momentous event for the Jews. Written in Hebrew by a certified sofer, or scribe, each word of the Torah, it is believed, has divine meaning and that any error renders it invalid.

The completion of a new Torah scroll yesterday attracted more than 200 people to the Chabad of the Rivertowns synagogue in Dobbs Ferry.

Jewish students at Western get their own place of worship

Western Front Online

Bellingham, WA – Overlooking Bellingham Bay, squeezed between two ordinary homes, a Jewish community thrives.

Jewish students at Western are getting their own place of worship with the opening of the first Chabad House in Bellingham. The house strives to serve the needs of Western’s Jewish community, said Rabbi Levi Backman, 25, the newly appointed co-director of Chabad of Bellingham, along with his wife, Hadassah Backman, 25.

Chabad-Lubavitch is a Hasidic movement that embraces a philosophy of study, consideration and social outreach, Backman said.

“Chabad” is a Hebrew acronym for “Wisdom, Understanding and Knowledge,” and Lubavitch, which means “city of brotherly love” in Russian, is the town in Russia where the movement began its inception 250 years ago, Backman said.

If it takes a village to raise a child, what does it take to raise a community?

Ask the Jewish community of New Orleans, and they’ll probably say that it takes tremendous patience, goodwill and achdut Yisrael, or cooperation. They know. They’ve been at it for nearly a year now, trying to rebuild what Katrina destroyed.

“The Negel Vassers?” Welcome to the Crown Heights Softball League

While they may not be as well-known as the Yankees, Crown Heights has four of its own home-grown softball teams comprised of young men with an enormous store of energy, a great sense of fun, and a real aversion to babysitting.

The Crown Heights Softball League was founded in 2005 by Zevi Steinhauser of Union Street and Danny Cole, Kingston Avenue. After four years of playing on a team representing Crown Heights in the Kings County Softball League (sponsored by Gershon Eichorn, Spotlight Design) they got permits to rent a field for their own private games and the two teams (11 players each) played each other every week. Today the league boasts four full-size teams: the Kings, Kloppers, Red Heifers, and Skullcaps.

At The Jewish Learning Center of Miami Beach

The Sun Definitely Revolves Around The Earth

On Shavuot night, at midnight, the crowd at the Jewish Learning Center of Miami Beach FL was treated to a lecture by Yisroel Krasnianski, one of the graduating rabbis of the Miami Smicha Program, headed by Rabbi Yisorel Frankforter. The topic of the lecture was Geocentricism vs. Heliocentric. The lecture took the crowd back in time to the famous dispute recorded in the Talmud between the Sages of Israel and the Gentile astronomers about whether the Earth stands still and the Sun revolves around it or vice versa. From the Talmud it continued on to the Rabbeinu Chanannel, Shita Mekubetzes, the Rambam, Copernicus, Plato, Aristotle, Albert Einstein, Hans Reichenbach and finally to the view of The Lubavitcher Rebbe.

The lecture, which lasted from 12 to 1am, ended with the subjects relevance to Shavuot based on the teachings of Chassidus. It was enjoyed by all and sparked much discussion and thought afterwards amongst the listeners. The JLC is headed by Rabbi Yossi and Rochel Gordon.

Principal under fire

New York Daily News

Bus-crush kid suspension probed

School investigators are probing whether a Brooklyn principal gave an illegal in-home suspension to an 8-year-old boy – setting off a chain reaction that led to the death of little Amber Sadiq.

Officials are also investigating whether Principal Deborah Barrett failed to report discipline matters to make Public School 161 in Crown Heights seem safer than it was, said Department of Education spokesman David Cantor.

The investigation comes after Albert James, the father of the first-grade boy, told the Daily News his son was repeatedly suspended and sent home from school.

Shomrim Members Graduate the City’s First CERT Course

The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help. CERT members also are encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking a more active role in emergency preparedness projects in their community.

The course which consisted of eleven classes, two and a half hours each, had 25 attendants which included 17 Shomrim members. They received training from fire fighters in handling small fires, stabilizing victims and light search and rescue.

Attending the graduation was personal from the Office Of Emergency Management, directors of the CERT Program as well as our 71st Precinct’s Commanding Officer, Deputy Inspector Frank Vega. The course was sponsored by our Community Board 9’s chairperson R. Yaakov Goldstein and district manager Mrs. Pearl Miles, who had both attended the graduation.
