The Sun Definitely Revolves Around The Earth

On Shavuot night, at midnight, the crowd at the Jewish Learning Center of Miami Beach FL was treated to a lecture by Yisroel Krasnianski, one of the graduating rabbis of the Miami Smicha Program, headed by Rabbi Yisorel Frankforter. The topic of the lecture was Geocentricism vs. Heliocentric. The lecture took the crowd back in time to the famous dispute recorded in the Talmud between the Sages of Israel and the Gentile astronomers about whether the Earth stands still and the Sun revolves around it or vice versa. From the Talmud it continued on to the Rabbeinu Chanannel, Shita Mekubetzes, the Rambam, Copernicus, Plato, Aristotle, Albert Einstein, Hans Reichenbach and finally to the view of The Lubavitcher Rebbe.

The lecture, which lasted from 12 to 1am, ended with the subjects relevance to Shavuot based on the teachings of Chassidus. It was enjoyed by all and sparked much discussion and thought afterwards amongst the listeners. The JLC is headed by Rabbi Yossi and Rochel Gordon.

"The lecture took the crowd back in time to the famous dispute recorded in the Talmud between the Sages of Israel and the Gentile astronomers about whether the Earth stands still and the Sun revolves around it or vice versa"
there is no such argument! the gemara (pesachim 94;2) mentiones 2 arguments 1) if the GALGAL stands still and the MAZOLOS revolve or vice versa. 2) if the sun goes into the REKIA by night or does it go below the earth.
Now, this Bochur mistook the GALGAL for earth and the MAZOLOS as the sun, but its not so (see RASHI).
it was never a debate between them whether the Earth stands still and the Sun revolves around it because it more than 1 POSSUK that says so:
AF TIKIN TEIVEIL (=globe) BAL TIMOT
    SHEMESH YODA MEVOIOI
the midrah says that Yehoshua told the sun to stop moving and he (Yehoshu) will sing HASHEM’S praises.

to me, Sruli (with an "I," i cant possibly forget that!) isnt a lecturer of geowhateverism stuff, to me he is alot more then that and i want to share it. i know he wont approve of it, but if it helps anyone else i know it was worth it. Its also my way of saying thanks again.

I was sitting on the sidewalk with a girl in mahattan (thats enough details) when you walked past us. I nodded to you, while the girl i was with turned her head away in imbarrasmnet (she was wearing pants etc…) you didnt nod back, making as if you never saw me. when you were half way down the block i yelled to you "dont judge us, youre no better yourself, your a faker like all the rest, youre a loser". Five minutes later you came back and handed me a reciept (from kosher delight, it was a burger fries and coke) and on the back was written in blue ink:

i dont know who you are or your friend. call me if you want – or dont – it wont matter either way. 917-….

it was signed "the passerby whoM (yes, it was with a "m") you judged of judging you". i called you week later just cause the wierd note made me very curious. we talked for a long time about everything (it was very wierd talking to you cause i didnt know you at all, but you made the conversation flow so easily). we emailed a few time and then i agreed to meet you. the first time we talked over a maamar, the second time we actually learned the maamar. you learnt/talked with me once a week fo rlike a month and weve kept in touch since. now i am in yeshiva, i might not keep to the yeshiva learning seder so well, but i spend most of my time learning and reading interesting books that you suggesested. the only times i get depressed is when i remember what my life used to be like a year and a half ago or hearing music of those days. no more drugs, no more girlfreind, no more fights at with parents. and you still answer all my long emails without ever telling me to shut up already. if things hadent happened this way im not sure where id be today. i dont want to give more details or say who i am, but i think people who could use someone like you should know about me.

pirkie avos… dont keep a good thing for yourself!
