Suspicious Package on Kingston and Montgomery

Thursday night at around 10:20pm someone spotted a red Mr. Greens bag laying against the wall with a note stuck to it which stated plainly ‘take me’, police were immediately called. The responding officers taped off the area with yellow crime scene tape and ordered the bomb squad to respond.

A short while after the Command Officer and Executive officer’s of the precinct responded as well and after prodding the bag they found it containing a towel.

Residents and visitors are urged to take extra care during this month of Tishrei not to leave bags or luggage around do to the possible security risks it can pose.

Happy New Year!

On behalf of CrownHeights.info – the leading news service for Crown Heights – and the staff we would like to wish all of our loyal readers a Happy New Year a K’siva Vachasima Tova and a Gut Gebentched Yohr. May this year be a safe, successful and prosperous year to all, and may we report the coming of Moshiach speedily in our days!

Presidential Message: Rosh Hashanah, 5767

I send greetings to those around the world celebrating Rosh Hashanah.

During these holy days, Jewish people begin the new year by answering the call of the Shofar and gathering in synagogues. It is a time to reflect on the past, celebrate the beginning of life, and welcome the promise of the future with a spirit of renewal and hope.

On this sacred holiday, I appreciate the Jewish people for your efforts to ensure that your values and traditions are passed on to future generations. As you begin the Days of Awe, your faith in the Almighty reminds us of the gift of religious freedom in our country and helps make the world a more hopeful place.

Laura and I send our best wishes for a peaceful Rosh Hashanah.

Robbery of a Bike Lands a 12 Year Old in Police Custody

Wednesday afternoon at Mincha in the Darchei Menachem Yeshiva on Eastern Parkway one of the students alerted one of the staff members, CP, to three Black youths hanging out in the schools front yard and eyeing the bikes that were parked there. CP made his way downstairs with a few of the students to ask the youths to leave when one of the students noticed his bike was missing.

Immediately after CP saw one of the youth fleeing on the bike and began chasing after the youth who was fleeing up Kingston then made a right turn onto St. Johns Pl. with CP hot on his trail when he called out to the thief that if he leaves the bike police would not be involved, which is when the youth dropped the bike and continued running on foot yet the pursuit continued with the thief now on foot and the pursuer on the bike.

Rosh Hashana: Coronation Night

by Yosef Y. Jacobson – Algemeiner.com
The Shofar

Two elderly Jews who hadn’t seen each other in 50 years, met, slowly recognized one another and embraced. They went back to the apartment of one of them to talk about the days long ago.

The conversation went for hours. Night fell. One asked the other, “Look at your watch. What time is it?”

“I don’t have a watch,” said the second.

“Then look at the clock.”

“I don’t have a clock.”

“Then how do you tell the time?”

“You see that trumpet in the corner?” asked the second. “That’s how I tell the time.”

“You’re crazy,” said the first. “How can you tell the time with a trumpet?”

The second one picked up the trumpet, opened the window and blew a deafening blast. Thirty seconds later an angry neighbor shouted, “Two thirty in the morning, and you’re playing the trumpet?” The man turned to his friend and said, “You see? That’s how you tell the time with a trumpet!”

Rosh Hashana: A Sacred Marriage… VIOLATED

by YoniQua

Overwhelmed with emotion, I lightly sway back and forth. I bring the siddur close to my face, breathing in the worn pages of the machzor. My lids are drawn closed by tears welling in the corners of my eyes. The day has finally come.

I stand before my G-d with both awe and the sinking feeling of a minute puzzle piece in the impressive puzzle of a Master. I take full stock of what I am. A TRAITOR.

I am a wicked, selfish traitor. I do not deserve this wonderful husband of mine. Time and again I have displeased him, caused Him pain and grief.

Our marriage is sacred. One no one can break. Yet, I have managed to violate that which I hold dearest and most holy. My marriage to G-d.

Rosh Hashana: The Drunken Prayer of A Sober Woman

by Israel Krasnianski

In loving memory of my dear aunt, Esther (bas Batya) Twersky, whose beautiful soul ascended the heavens two years ago on her birthday, Rosh Hashanah.

Army of G-d

A man was heading out of the synagogue one day, and as always the rabbi was standing at the door shaking hands as the congregation departed. The rabbi grabbed the man by the hand, pulled him aside and said “You need to join the Army of G-d!” The man said, “I’m already in the Army of G-d, Rabbi.” The Rabbi questioned, “How come I don’t see you except for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur?” The man whispered back, “I’m in the secret service.”

Hannah’s surge of the heart

In the Haftorah reading of Rosh Hashanah, we recite a most interesting incident recorded in the Prophets[i] about Hannah’s prayer to G-d on Rosh Hashanah[ii]:

Tonight – The Precinct Council Meeting

So, we all used the comments to vent our anger at police at the community and the community council and we all criticized each other for talking and not doing. So here is your chance to do something!

Attend the precinct council meeting, it takes place in IS 61 located at 400 Empire Blvd on the corner of New York Ave. and it begins at 7:30. Deputy Inspector and Commanding Officer Frank Vega attends each of these meetings, and will be there to listen to suggestions and complaints from residents.

Be there or be nowhere! Your attendance will show our care and support for our community!

The Weekly D’Var Torah – Rosh Hashanah

Rosh HaShanna is the first and most important holiday of the year; it commemorates the exact date that G-d put the finishing touch on the world by creating man.

The main ‘Mitzvah’ of this day, the first of the year and perhaps the most important commandment in Judaism is sounding the Shofar.

Besides the fact that the Shofar announces that Judaism is the only religion that celebrates and sanctifies the creation of the world, it also commemorates and reminds us of the reason that man was created; namely to be partners with G-d in maintaining and improving the entire creation…. by doing His commandments!

Picture of the Night?!

The driver along with a partial view of the group in the truck.

Driving past 770 at 1:00am I was treated to a bizarre and shocking display of complete disregard of safety and people being reduced to the lowest levels of what standards we regard as ‘normal living’.

Nearly 50 young Israeli girls crammed into the back of a box truck along with luggage were being transported from 770 to a house on President and New York where they will be staying for the month of Tishrai.

Yet Another Attempted Mugging At Gun Point, In Broad Daylight

Yesterday [Wednesday] afternoon at around 4:00 a woman pushing a stroller with her child on Crown St between Brooklyn and Kingston was approached by two Black males one of which was brandishing a gun when they demanded her purse. The woman reacted by running out to the middle of the street and began screaming for help.

The two perps began fleeing towards Brooklyn Ave when the police was notified and responded immediately. The gun toting mugger was apprehended and taken down to the Precinct where the victim successfully picked the perp out of a lineup.

Another Accident On Empire and Troy

Tuesday evening at around 7:30 a Jewish member of the community was heading down Empire Blvd from Schenectady Ave towards Albany Ave when a car headed in the opposite direction attempted to make a sudden left turn up Troy Ave causing a collision.

The driver who tried to pull the turn onto Albany driving a Red Minivan was struck on its side by the large SUV, driven by the yiddishe driver, causing the minivan to spin a full 360 degrees. In such cases drivers waiting to turn do not have the right of way.

Challah challenge

Herald Tribune

Venice, FL – Rivka Schmerling grew up in Brooklyn with a grandmother who would bake challah for everyone. If they needed more, they could walk to a bakery down the block.

Schmerling, 23, started the Chabad of Venice and North Port with her husband, Rabbi Sholom Schmerling, in 2005. As host of holiday and Sabbath dinners often for more than a dozen people, Schmerling had no access to a kosher bakery and no choice but to start baking the traditional Jewish yeast bread.
