Jump start Summer at Winter Expo; Running Springs Really Running

Jewish Journal

Organizers are hoping to significantly increase last year’s inaugural summer of 180 kids at Camp Gan Israel in Running Springs.

The camp, a 70-acre site near Big Bear that Chabad purchased for $4.3 million two years ago, recently broke ground on a 10,000-square-foot multipurpose building and has invested another $1.5 million in other improvements, including a newly remodeled synagogue, enlarged dining hall, kitchen improvements, a game room and upgraded air conditioning, bathrooms and carpets.

Winterbreak Ski Retreat Allows Students to Explore Their Jewish Identities

Jennifer Anne Perez – Chabad.edu

When college student Allison Singer saw the fliers for Winterbreak, a California ski and learn retreat organized by a group of Chabad on Campus emissaries, she had zero plans to attend. But that was before circumstances – and perhaps more than a little bit of divine intervention – got her up that mountain.

“I didn’t have the time to go on the trip at first,” says Singer, a 20-year-old University of California at Santa Barbara student. “Then my car broke down. Because my car broke down, I lost my job. All of a sudden I had plenty of time on my hands.”

Cartoon Riles Readers and Officials

The Jewish Exponent

Philadelphia, PA — Arnold Soslow wasn’t amused when he read an editorial cartoon in a recent edition of the Northeast Times. In fact, Soslow, 68, of Northeast Philadelphia, said he was appalled.

“To me, it was anti-Semitic,” said Soslow, calling the cartoonist’s spoof of the recent Seattle Christmas tree debacle “offensive and inaccurate.” He added, “That just hit home a little bit.”

The Weekly Sedra – Parshas Vayechi

The Rebbe says:

1. In this week’s Parshah Ya’akov Avinu (our father) blesses each one of his 12 children (Chapter 49, Verses 1 through 28).

When Ya’akov Avinu blesses his son Asher he says “From Asher- his bread is rich, he will provide kingly delicacies” (Chapter 49, Verse 20).

Rashi (Rabbi Shlomo Yitzchaki) explains this blessing and says: The food which comes from the land that Asher received as an inheritance is rich and fat because there are many olives in his portion which give oil like a spring. As we see that Moshe Rabbeinu (our teacher) also blessed Asher by saying “and he will (even be able to) dip his feet in oil”.

Police ‘Rough-Up Victim’ Was Cuffed

The NY Post

The off-duty sergeant and two cops charged with assaulting a suspect in Brooklyn knocked their prisoner to the ground and kicked him while he was handcuffed and down, police sources revealed yesterday.

The trio, assigned to the 71st Precinct in Crown Heights, allegedly roughed up the man after uniformed police had arrested him for breaking into the personal car of the off-duty sergeant.

Not content with having the suspect, Gaspar Alcade, in shackles, Sgt. Gregory Abrahams allegedly punched him in the face.
