The Jewish cemetery in Berditchev was targeted by the Soviets in 1929. Working secretly at night, workers built a new Kever above the actual Kever of Rabbi Levi Yitzchak of Berditchev. This new Kever was to be used as a decoy, in order to protect the real tomb from harm. Now, the Kever has finally been uncovered.

Mikhail Popereka, a deputy minister of the Ukrainian branch of the MGB Soviet secret police—the precursor to the KGB—drafted an 11-page memo on the status of the ongoing investigation into the case of the “Chassidim” and sent it to Viktor Abakumov, minister of state security (MGB) of the Soviet Union.
