CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn [CHI] – This past Motzoai Shabbos the “Maple Street Shul, Cong. Ahavas Moshe” held their annual Melava Malka. R. Eli Blachman opened the evening with a brief history about the Shul and the support the Rebbe gave it.

CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn [CHI] — Over 500 guests comprised of community leaders, supporters and friends gathered last night at the Jewish Children’s Museum to celebrate its third anniversary with an international food walk-through and awards ceremony.
“Tonight’s theme reflects our mission of uniting various cultures. Through foods spanning the globe, we celebrate each other’s diversity in a fun and engaging way,” said Mendy Spalter, the Museum’s Director of Development.

CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn [CHI] — In preparation for Yud Shevat, NCFJE’s Released Time Program of greater New York had a Melave Malka for all their instructors and outreach workers. The gathering was meant to strengthen their Hiskashrus/connection to the Rebbe and to rededicate their efforts to teaching public school children one hour of Torah a week.
Over one hundred of the 150 Released Time instructors attended this Melave Malka, which was a great success.

WILLIAMSBURG, Brooklyn [CHI] — At 11:00pm last night the Williamsburg’s Shomrim Hotline received a call for a person that had been missing since 10:00am. The missing, 61 year old Berel Lerner, who has a mental history, didn’t show up to the Petach Tikvah Yeshiva.
Williamsburg Shomrim members began canvassing the area and later called the Crown Heights Shomrim Division for more manpower and together they searched into the night.

HALLANDALE, FL — A teenaged girl severely injured in a car accident on Sunday is showing signs of improvements, but another girl also involved in the accident remains in a drug-induced coma, a friend said on Friday.
After reading the article on this site, in which a Jew was targeted with Naziesque slurs, I was reminded of a similar one, in which I witnessed a group of bochurim on Tahalucha who were shouted at with the similar chants of “Heil Hitler!”
Surprisingly, I was perplexed and shocked more than I was angry. Had the youth been neo-Nazis, Germans, skinheads, or the like, I would have been predictably upset that such illegal hate, racism and anti-Semitism occurred. What perplexed me was the fact that the perpetrators in this instance were fellow victims of Hitler and the Nazi regime. It had may as well be a Reform Jew shouting “Heil Hitler” an Orthodox Jew – something which would never occur, as both Reform and Orthodox Jews were victims of Hitler and the Nazis.
MOUNT OLIVE TWP, NJ – With interest growing and a core group returning, the Chabad Jewish Center in Flanders is establishing a strong foundation for its future.
In last Winter’s column, (here) I reflected on Chabad’s admirable hospitality. Indeed, throughout the world, in virtually every city where a Jewish community of even modest size is to be found, Chabad shelichim (emissaries) conduct religious services, visit hospitals, teach children, organize Jewish holiday celebrations, and offer Shabbat meals to lonely Jewish students and travelers. No other Jewish movement—Orthodox, Conservative, or Reform—has been able to produce a corps of similarly devoted young men and women who are prepared to serve the Jewish people with such personal sacrifice.
Unfortunately, other Chabad practices are less admirable. Here are two examples.

LANCASTER, PA — Rabbi Elazar Green believes the most important building in the Jewish faith isn’t the synagogue. It’s the home.
“It’s where people can come and experience and live Judaism,” he said.
BROOKLYN, NY — October 16th marked the 28th yahrzeit of Rabbi Dovid Okunov, who was brutally gunned down at the age of 68 on his way to the morning shacharit service on Montgomery Street. On Thursday, October 25, 1979 (Daled Cheshvan) at 7 a.m., Reb Dovid, as he was affectionately known, was shot in the head with one bullet. A much beloved Torah teacher and community worker, Reb Dovid died at the scene. The entire Lubavitch community and Jews in New York were in a state of shock when the murder story appeared in the New York Times and Daily News.
Over 3,000 Lubavitch chassidim attended his funeral later on that day, and he was laid to rest at the Old Montefiore Cemetery in Queens not far from the resting place of the 6th Lubavitcher Rebbe.

BROOKLYN, NY — With hand saws, drills and lots of adult supervision, kids at the Jewish Children’s Museum prepared to toot in a new year by making their very own shofars.
“This is fun,” Shloimie Werner, 10, said recently as he sawed and sawed, trying to cut off the tip of a ram’s horn to make his shofar.
The renowned Chabad writer, Rabbi Yehoshua Dubrowsky published a bitter article in the Yiddish Newspaper, Der Algemeiner Journal, condemning the tragic ‘selections’ made when enrolling students in Chabad yeshivas in the U.S.
“How can we face the philanthropists Reb Lev Leviev and Mr. George Rohr who have been granting millions to Chabad in order to bring non-observant children closer to religion, while, at the same time affluent Chabadniks do not cover the budgets of our own yeshivas so that all students may be accepted willingly.

Russia’s Chief Rabbi Berel Lazar said Sunday that not enough was being done to deal with neo-Nazi groups in the country, Israel Radio reported.
The rabbi’s comments came a day after the murder of a Jewish teacher in St. Petersburg. The stab wounds on Dmitriy Nikulinskiy’s body, noted Lazar, prove that his killing was an anti-Semitic attack.
St. Petersburg has a long history of terror-related murders, but this is the first time in the last few years that a Jew was murdered for this reason, added the rabbi.
