Jews have been the target of injustice for centuries. From judges on the bench to the chancellors who might appoint them, our people have enough historical experience to know when it is time to defend ourselves.

Magistrates preside over cases dealing with minor offenses, and over preliminary hearings that deal with more consequential ones. But a statement made by Magistrate Jon Stuart Scoles on Nov. 20, concerning the bail of an orthodox Jew, was a major offense to every American Jew. It must evoke a harsh response from the Jewish community. In his ruling, the Judge cited Israel's Law of Return as grounds for not permitting a Jewish defendant to be released on bond, even though he had already surrendered his passport.

SOUTH BAY, CA — South Bay Jewish leaders were stunned to hear that their friend and colleague, Rabbi Gavriel Holtzberg, and his wife, Rivkah, were targeted victims in last week's terrorist attacks in India.

Rabbi Sholom Pinson of Chabad of the South Bay attended the same school as Holtzberg and lived just a block from his childhood home in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Op-Ed: Mumbai: Deadly Media Euphemisms

The international media have already morphed the horrific slaughter in Mumbai into the murky realm of euphemism and apologetics.

Al Jazeera and The Guardian label the terrorists “gunmen”; CNN calls them “militants.” Some analysts identified the underlying cause as the Kashmir dispute between India and Pakistan. Psychological guru Deepak Chopra called it the result of “collateral damage” from the US war on terrorism and the Iraq war.

To find the 10th man for a minyan, the quorum required in Orthodox Jewish services, some rabbis on the Lower East Side of Manhattan have been known in recent years to step into the street and stop passers-by. Are you Jewish? they ask.

In an imperfect world a famed man can be defamed. A practitioner of benevolence can be terrorized by malevolence. A man of refreshing candor becomes the victim of violent slander. Yet while I knew of the libel against him, I also knew that in good times and not such good times, we Jews inquire of our fellows' welfare. In the most precarious of conditions, we will still be curious of our brethren's well being. Resting my palm upon his arm, and with near sarcastic thoughts, I asked how he was. With his humility, integrity, and sincerity, he responded, “the grace of G-d.” A wholehearted answer from a man who walks wholeheartedly with G-d, and who with relentless goodness makes the world a home for G-dliness.

Faced with horrific aspersion, he maintains propriety with devout assertion. With venomous assaults on his person, he continues to be a kind and different kind of person.

But no good deed goes unpunished, and no act of charity goes unresented.

Man Robbed and Assaulted, Perp Arrested

CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn [CHI] —- Wednesday, at around 5:45pm, a yungerman pushing a stroller was ‘held-up’ in an alleyway. The incident took place in the alleyway between Carroll and Crown, Kingston and Albany, where a Black male approached the yundgerman, stated he had a gun, and demanded money.

The Black male had his hand in a plastic bag and said he had a gun, the yungerman who was stunned did not immediately respond, prompting the mugger to attack him and punch him in face, dropping the bag that was over his hand, revealing that he in fact did not have a gun, the mugger then grabbed the yungerman’s bag, which contained his cellphone, and digital camera then fled down the alleyway.

Captain Simonetti a has long history with policing in the borough of Brooklyn, starting with his uncle, Tosano “Tony” Simonetti who was the Brooklyn South Commanding Officer, the position which is now held by Chief Jospeh Fox, and quickly worked his way up the ranks all the way to the ‘number 2’ position in the NYPD, the First Deputy Police Commissioner, which he retired from in 1997 to take a lucrative security position with billionaire Ronald Perelman.

Like his uncle, Captain Simonetti shares the same tough attitude and strong approach to the job.

Beis Rivka’s Eighth Grade Graduation Trip

WASHINGTON, DC [CHI] — Students in Beis Rivka’s eighth grade class celebrated their graduation recently with a whirlwind tour of the nation’s capital, but before they enjoyed the typical Washington, DC sightseeing they took time to stop and remember the 6,000,000 Jews who perished in the Holocaust at the United States Holocaust Museum.

The girls had studied the Holocaust this year, but still felt chills seeing the railcar, the bunker transported from Aushwitz, and other displays at the museum.

CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn — Passover will have yet more meaning this year for Shirley Levy, who came from Caracas, Venezuela, to Crown Heights to learn about Judaism.

By the time the holiday begins at sundown Saturday, Levy, 25, will have learned how to properly remove all yeast products from her home and how hand matzoh is correctly made within 18 minutes so there is no chance for it to rise.
