Chassidic Rabbi First Ever Jewish Chaplain to Georgia’s State Defense Force

MIAMI, FL — Sunday, March 2nd, Rabbi Zalman Lipskier, Director of Chabad at Emory University, Atlanta, GA, will be formally commissioned as the first Jewish Chaplain in Georgia’s military history to serve in the Georgia State Defense Force and Army, Air and National Guard.

This is the second appointment of a Chassidic Rabbi to one of the country’s 25 volunteer State Defense Forces. “I’ve wanted Jewish representation in the Georgia State Defense Force and National Guard for a long time,” said Commanding General Michael McGuinn, “and I was absolutely thrilled when a friend of mine told me that a Chassidic Rabbi had joined the Maryland State Defense Force. He put me in touch with The Aleph Institute who is appointed by the U.S. Department of Defense as an Ecclesiastical Endorsing Agency and serves the Jewish military population worldwide. They sent out a request and Rabbi Lipskier answered the call.” The Aleph Institute endorsed the Rabbi into chaplaincy service and provided the financial assistance to procure his military uniforms and equipment.

Women Emissaries in Israel Celebrate Shabbat Together

More than 200 Chabad-Lubavitch women who co-direct Israel-based Chabad Houses spent last weekend examining ways to bring a measure of rest to their hectic lives. According to organizers, the choice of the theme was obvious considering that the gathering fell out smack dab in the middle of Israel’s shmittah year, the biblically-mandated once-every-seven-years period of rest for farmland.

Letter from Guggy Tzivin – Nechamas Closet (A)

Many of us understand the financial strain of putting a wedding together. The hall, band, photographer, and house hold items. But what of the kallah’s clothing?

For the past 10 years Nechamas closet has been helping kallahs and women receive new clothing and sheitels.

Many of Nechamas closet customers are orphans, and then there are those who can’t make ends meet. We all know how we feel when we don’t have something decent to wear. We’re uncomfortable and embarrassed. Imagine a kallah who’s the center of attention or a woman who has to go to a function, shul or work.

Thursday Nights Precinct Council Meeting

CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn [CHI] — This past Thursday night, the monthly Precinct Council Meeting took place with just a handful of Jewish residents in attendance, along with typical turnout at these meetings.

Commanding Officer of the 71st Precinct, Deputy Inspector Frank Vega started his address with the crime statistics, where he noted that in comparison to this time last year crime is slightly up, but overall its significantly down, due in part to the large police presences since the racially motivated attack on a Bochur, Friday night a couple of weeks back.

Rabbi Demonstrates Ancient Skill of Torah Making

Harriet P. Gross – The Dallas Morning News

DALLAS, TX — A turkey feather. The tendons and tail hairs of cows. These are the basic tools of Faitel Lewin’s trade.

Rabbi Lewin is a sofer, a modern-day practitioner of an ancient and essential Jewish craft: scribing Torahs. With his turkey quill pen, he writes the full text of the Bible’s first five books, Genesis through Deuteronomy, in Hebrew on sheets of parchment prepared from animal skins. Then he wraps and stitches them into a pliable scroll with his bovine threads.
