Thursday Nights Precinct Council Meeting

CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn [CHI] — This past Thursday night, the monthly Precinct Council Meeting took place with just a handful of Jewish residents in attendance, along with typical turnout at these meetings.

Commanding Officer of the 71st Precinct, Deputy Inspector Frank Vega started his address with the crime statistics, where he noted that in comparison to this time last year crime is slightly up, but overall its significantly down, due in part to the large police presences since the racially motivated attack on a Bochur, Friday night a couple of weeks back.

Mr. Vega spoke about all the ‘beat cops’ who are seen walking around the neighborhood, he explained that they are around 70 officer ‘on loan’ from the task force who are on patrols of three different shifts across the day. He also said that we will not have them forever. He then introduced the officers and thanked them for their service.

Questions were taken, one about the evidence screw-up by the District Attorneys office in regards to the trial or Robert Ellis who is charged with the murder of Officer Russell Timoshenko, Mr. Vega said that it would have no bearing on the case, as there was both a written statement along with another recording that was taken later in the presence of the DA.

A resident stood up and asked for details regarding the dates and times of the proceeding in the case, so that residents can attend and show support, Mr. Vega said that there was no dates set yet.

Then a 15 year old Law Enforcement Explorer stood up and told the crowd about herself and the other explorers, saying how they all had a choice about drugs and crime but they choose to be good students and follow the law, and that jail isn’t the only place. The statement received tremendous applause from the crowd.

Mr. Vega then brought to attention a spike in cell phones robberies, were being stolen from people on the streets, specifically the ‘sidekick’, where perps would snatch the phones and flee. The incidents are confided to around 2:00pm to 4:00pm when schools are released and more in the vicinity of Utica Avenue.

There was one incident, in which a ‘beat cop’ observed the crime being committed and gave chase and following a short pursuit the perp was caught.

Residents that attended told CrownHeights.info that they felt the meeting to be significantly more productive and that Mr. Vega was a lot more open and listening to the crowd, they also expressed dismay to the fact that so few residents turned out to the meeting.

  • i would have gone

wouldnt be bad idea if you posted areminder about the meeting a day before so ppl would know

  • A resident who cares

i would have attended and brought my friends had i known about it. my internet was down for a while. next time there is a meeting such as this one, people should be notified other than just the internet. such as calls to residents, flyers, etc. by the community council. It’s important that we know so that we can show we care.

  • Tell us in advance

More people would’ve shown up if we would have been notified about it earlier.

  • Needs to be better publicized

The meeting is important to attend. Perhaps flyers being sent out for several weeks on the day before the meeting would improve attendance. Or perhaps signs in every Shul. Not everyone reads crownheights.info or is personally involved in Shomrim etc…

The residents of crown heights only seem to go when they have complaints about police, it is a shame. the police are the only thing that keep the others from dominating us.

  • Optimistic

Thanks for this report. Knowing that our presence DID make a difference and our ernest protests were noticed and heeded, will encourage more Crown Heights citizens to take an active stand towards protecting their community. I was at this meeting and I cannot overstate the attittude-change evident on the part of the police. At the same time, it was obvious that they were waiting for the interest-level to slide again… it is SO important to keep showing our concern.

PS, One element of the meeting that was not mentioned was that several members of Anash voiced their gratitude for the beefed-up police presence and the police thanked them in turn. There is a new wind blowing…it can gather force or it can blow over. Let each of us commit to coming to one more meeting, thanking one more officer, filing one more report…we ARE making a difference, let us not stop now!

  • stop the hate

Everyone is quick to complain, but no one is ready to take a few hours of their night, once a month to show up to the meetings, or vote in elections, then you wonder why we are where we are.
always leave it for someone else to do.

  • Take initiative

I believe the meeting takes place the 3rd thursday of every month. So it should be up to the residents to take a little initiative and remember or call the police precinct to find out. Flyers cost money, so unless you’re willing to sponsor, don’t complain.

  • To take initiative

Please be advised that THERE IS A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN commenting AND complaining. People are commenting…Please don’t be so harsh in your judgement

  • different point of view

aww the how sweet the police need recognition for doing there jobs.I understand if it was a good job then i would understand. But wasn’t there another mugging last week on lefferts ave. Crown Heights you can’t rely on the police.I guess many feel the same way as of the looks of the turn out for there meeting.the cops looked there lined up to receive an award or something.
