CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn [CHI] — In the wake of resent attacks on our community, Officer Vinie Martinos of the 71st Precinct Community Policing Unit, turned to the Jewish community for their input in the Police Athletic League essay competition. The competition is open to all the public and private high schools around the entire New York City.
Entitled: if you were police commissioner for a day, what steps would you take to reduce violent crime and protect all new yorkers? Yosef Abrahamson a student at Darchai Menachem took on the challenge.
Yesterday, Tuesday, Yosef essay was one of the essays picked. We have obtained a copy of his Essay. It is a must read, even from the mouth of a 16 year old, his words and message is strong and clear.

In 5727 (1967), a young chassid from Australia traveled to New York to spend Shavuot with the Lubavitcher Rebbe in Brooklyn. He arrived a few days before the festival, just a short time after the Rebbe, at the outbreak of the Six-Day War, had inaugurated the campaign to arouse all Jewish males to perform the mitzvah of wrapping tefillin. He had cited the verse, “The fear of the nations will be upon you,” and the traditional interpretation that this results when our enemies see our head-tefillin. In the aftermath of the miraculous victory and the Jewish arousal that accompanied it, the Rebbe recommended to continue and even increase the tefillin campaign.The lines above are the opening paragraph of an article by Yrachiel Tilles that appeared on the ascentofsafed.com website. The punch-line of the story, that the bochur and his friends got a cranky old man to agree to put on tefillin because the Australian had mistakenly brought along some stale hamantaschen, caught my attention and I decided to publish this heart-warming story as a “Slice of Life” in L’Chaim.

In a phone conversation with CrownHeights.info Inspector Vega said: “I am unaware of any plans for my transfer as of yet”.
“A Commanding Officers term is typically 2 or 4 years, my last two commands were two years” he said, and then added “I am here in Crown Heights for three years now, and as far as I know and was informed, is that I have another year to go.”

People who met with Commissioner Kelly say the message they wanted to get across is that the incidents aren’t a Jewish issue or a black issue, but a problem facing the entire community.

Cool in Crown Heights
CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn — The touchy, sometimes volatile relationships between black and Jewish residents of Brooklyn’s Crown Heights have frayed, with members of each community blaming the other for violent attacks aimed at youngsters.
In January, a Jewish teenager needed stitches after being jumped by black youths shouting epithets. In April, a black college student got pepper-sprayed and clubbed by a man police say may be a member of a Jewish community patrol. And Friday, another Jewish teen was beaten and robbed by black perpetrators.
After Visit, Police Increase Visibility, Patrols
CROWN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn [CHI] — After the surprise visit by Police Commissioner Ray Kelly, there was a noticeable increase in police patrols and vehicles, some say it was due to Kelly’s unhappiness with the fact that there was no police posted in front of 770 and that the patrols weren’t very visible.
Two of the NYPD’s ‘skywatch’ towers were deployed in Crown Heights, one on Eastern Parkway and Brooklyn Avenue while the other on Schenectady Avenue and Carroll Street, along with three NYPD Mobile Command Posts.
