I read Rabbi Hecht’s opinion piece this morning and I want to state that I wholeheartedly concur with everything he said. As a resident of Crown Heights, I look forward to the crush of guests and the warmth of Tishrei. There is an excitement in the air that can not be replicated at other times of the year. Each year the number of guests in Crown Heights continues to multiply and multiply.

I have seen highly organized programs, with dedicated madrichim, and serious learning. I have had wonderful guests who continued to stay in touch even several years later.

SHARON, MA — On August 28th Leah Larson, 17 year old creator and editor of the popular YALDAH magazine for girls worldwide, was chosen as a semifinalist in the 'Someday Stories' contest by Wells Fargo Bank.

Chosen, along with four others, from 10,000 applicants, Leah received $10,000 for her magazine. Yaldah – Hebrew for “girl” – is a magazine that encourages young girls to follow their dreams, empowers them to take leadership roles in their communities and celebrates their Jewish faith.

Beginning today, New Yorkers will have their chance to buy a drivers license that will allow them to cross the border without a passport.

The enhanced license will be another accepted form of identification when traveling by car or boat to Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Bermuda.

Starting in June, federal law says all travelers will no longer be allowed to cross the border with just a regular license or birth certificate.

Chabad.org Editorial Conference

Rabbi Bentzi Sudak leads a discussion about the new Chabad.org homepage

BROOKLYN, NY [CHI] — Members of the editorial team of Chabad.org – the world’s leading Jewish website and the flagship site of the Chabad Lubavitch movement – gathered from across the globe last week in New York for two days of intense brainstorming and skill-building sessions.

The conference began at the Rebbe’s Ohel, where editorial team members signed and read a Pidyon Nefesh asking the Rebbe for his guidance and brachos for the team to merit to fulfill the Rebbe’s wishes of them in spreading yiddishkeit, Torah and Mitzvos and the fountains of Chassidus in the best and widest possible manner.

On Friday evening before Sabbath services and dinner, Rabbi Shaya Gansbourg dons his best black fedora and long silk coat and sets out chairs and prayer books.

The rich aroma of his wife's matzo ball soup drifts through the hall, a tempting, olfactory invitation to pray.

The Gansbourgs know their food has to be good if they want to attract a crowd. Not all their congregants strictly keep the Sabbath or kosher, and on Fridays, just a few blocks away, is Amy Ruth's soul food restaurant with chicken and waffles.

Gansbourg, a stout man with a silver-streaked beard and a thick Yiddish accent, is the spiritual leader of Chabad of Harlem, a one-room synagogue and community center on the ground floor of 437 Manhattan Ave. at 118th St. that he and his wife, Goldie, opened last year.

As we approach Tishrei – of a Shnas Hakhel - many families are considering sending their teenage sons and daughters (sometimes even younger) to Crown Heights for Yom Tov in order to draw from the deep well of Chabad richness – the Rebbe’s Shul, the Sukkah, the Ohel and the streets of the Schunah.

Undoubtedly, many parents feel that the time spent in Crown Heights is a time to charge or recharge the batteries of our children to help them tackle a year of learning, Mivtzoim and success.

There is no Kedushah in the world like Crown Heights in Tishrei, however, a cornerstone of Chabad philosophy is “Zeh LeUmas Zeh Asah Elokim” and therefore great caution is necessary.
